SHIRLEY, N.Y. – The Queens College softball team fell to 12th-ranked Dowling College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 4-0, Tuesday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.
Game 1: No. 12 Dowling 5, Queens 3
The host Golden Lions (32-2, 18-0 ECC) picked up all of their offense in the bottom of the first inning off Queens (19-19, 8-10 ECC) starter, Bryttne Santana (CG, 8 H, 2 BB, 5 K).
Carla Pennolino (2-for-3) led off the top of the second with a single, and came around to score on Melissa Natale's RBI grounder to get the visitors on the board. Then in the fifth inning, Allison Breakey and Anniela Vaccaro scored when Kaitlyn Crowley singled to right field, pulling Queens within a 5-3 count.
In addition to Breakey and Crowley, Santana and Samantha Stallone notched one single apiece.
Game 2: No. 12 Dowling 4, Queens 0
Dowling starter Jessie Stavola pitched her first collegiate perfect game, setting down all 21 Knights in succession with 14 strikeouts. The Golden Lions picked up one run in the bottom of the first, and tacked on three more on Emily Slack's homer in the sixth frame.
Queens starter, Julia Carbone went the distance in the pitcher's circle, allowing just four hits, two earned runs to go with one walk and two strikeouts.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's Knights will look to get back into the win column Friday afternoon, when it travels to the University of Bridgeport for a 1 p.m. ECC doubleheader.
