FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College softball team ran into hot-hitting Molloy College Friday afternoon, as the visiting Lions captured both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader by scores of 6-1 and 8-4.
Game 1: Molloy 6, Queens 1
Molloy (25-8, 10-3 ECC) received solo homers from Megan Butterworth (first inning) and Haley Calderwood (fifth inning), as well as a pinch-hit, three-run blast from Dayna White in the sixth frame to pace the visitors. Queens (19-17, 8-8 ECC) got one run back in the sixth when Allison Breakey scored as Anniela Vaccaro stole second base, but could get no closer, as Butterworth fired a complete-game four-hitter with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Bryttne Santana took the loss in the pitching circle, and added a triple on offense for the Knights.
Game 2: Molloy 8, Queens 4
Nicolette Sinagra gave the Lions a 1-0 lead on a solo homer in the second, before the host Knights knotted the score on Melissa Natale's first homer of the season in the bottom of the third.
The teams traded one run apiece in the fourth inning on Sinagra's sacrifice fly and Santana's bases-loaded walk, respectively, before Molloy took the lead for good in the fifth on Katie Kraus's RBI single. Carla Campagna added a grand slam in the sixth for the Lions, before pinch-hitter Josette Cavallaro lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh to push Molloy in front by an 8-2 count.
Santana ripped a first-pitch home run to left-center in the bottom of the seventh, before Natale (double off the left-field wall) scored on Samantha Stallone's single.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's Knights are scheduled to be back in action Monday afternoon on the road, as they travel to Waterbury, Conn., for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Post University.
