FLUSHING, N.Y. - The C.W. Post softball team's offensive breakout was too much for host Queens College to overcome Sunday afternoon, as the visiting Pioneers swept the East Coast Conference doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 11-2.
Game 1: C.W. Post 8, Queens 0 (six innings)
The Pioneers (22-8, 10-4 ECC) used a three-hitter from Christina Berardi and four home runs on offense - including two by Nicole Hagenah - to take control of the game. Hagenah drove in a run in the first inning, before her double down the left-field line and a Kendall Bright sacrifice fly increased the lead to 3-0 in the third inning.
Kaci Hopkins, Hagenah and Jessica Julich each hit solo shots in the fifth inning as C.W. Post took control, while Hagenah's two-run shot in the sixth accounted for the final score.
Singles by Melissa Natale and Samantha Stallone in the bottom of the third inning moved the former to third base, and provided the best opportunity for Queens (19-13, 8-6 ECC) to get on the board. But Berardi induced a pair of infield groundouts to get out of trouble.
Game 2: C.W. Post 11, Queens 2 (five innings)
Hagenah hit a grand slam and Julich followed with a two-run shot in the seven-run fourth inning for C.W. Post, putting the Pioneers in front by a 10-1 count after they took a three-run lead after one inning of play.
Stallone scored on a passed ball and two wild pitches in the third inning to cut the Queens deficit to 3-1, before the Knights added a run in the fourth when Catherine Pastor's left-side single plated Alexandra Drago.
Head coach Brian DeMasters' Queens side will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to the University of Bridgeport (Conn.) for a 3 p.m., East Coast Conference doubleheader.
