CLERMONT, Fla. – The Queens College
softball team wrapped up its annual trip to Florida Monday
afternoon, as the Knights earned a split with Assumption College.
The Greyhounds (3-3) topped QC by an 8-7 decision in game one,
before Queens (2-6) scored a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Game 1: Assumption 8, Queens 7
Queens posted season-highs in runs scored and hits (12), but
were unable to overcome Assumption's tie-breaking run in the bottom
of the fifth inning. Four Knights players picked up two hits
apiece, including: Allison Breakey
(2-for-2, SB), Kaitlyn Crowley
(3 RBI), Caroline
Carbone and Faith Tessmer.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, QC exploded for
five runs in the top of the third inning to take a four-run lead.
Breakey lofted a sacrifice fly to score Bryttne Santana
(1-for-3), before Anniela Vaccaro
tripled home Melissa Natale (2
R). Vaccaro's base-knock was the first of five-consecutive hits for
the Knights, including a RBI single by Crowley and a two-run single
to center field by Carla
Pennolino.
Following a four-run bottom of the third in which Assumption
tied the game at 5-all, the teams traded a pair of runs each in the
fourth frame to move the score to 7-7. Natale led off with a walk,
and moved to second two batters later on Breakey's single through
the left side of the infield. Crowley then doubled home the pair to
give the Knights a temporary 7-5 lead.
After the Greyhounds took an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the
fifth, the best Queens chance to tie the game came when Breakey and
Vaccaro reached on back-to-back walks in the sixth inning. However,
Assumption hurler Chelsea Durso got the next hitter to strike out
looking to end the threat, and set Queens down in order in the
seventh inning to send her team to victory.
Game 2: Queens 2, Assumption 0
Santana pitched a complete-game five-hitter with two walks and
four strikeouts, while Queens provided all the run support she
would need with a two-run fifth inning. Pennolino (2-for-2) led off
the frame with a single to left field, before moving up on
Santana's sacrifice bunt. Samantha
Stallone (2-for-2, 2 SB) walked two batters later, before
Pennolino and Stallone advanced on a wild pitch and stolen base,
respectively. Breakey then provided the breakthrough hit, singling
home both runners to provide for the final score.
Santana did not allow a runner to advance past second base all
game, and induced a fly out with a runner on second in the top of
the sixth inning.
Vaccaro doubled in the first inning to keep her season-opening
eight-game hitting streak intact.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's Queens squad is back in action
March 16, when the Knights travel to Waterbury, Conn., for a 2:30
p.m. doubleheader at Post University.
