CLERMONT, Fla. – Carla Pennolino hit a
bases-clearing triple to round out a four-run sixth inning Sunday
morning, as the Queens College softball team picked up its first
win of the 2011 campaign with a 5-3 triumph over American
International College in the second game of a doubleheader at the
National Training Center. The Yellow Jackets (1-3) defeated the
Knights (1-5) in the first contest of the day, 4-2.
Game 1: American International 4, Queens 2
The Knights struggled offensively for most of the contest, as
they did not advance a runner past second base until the seventh
inning – when they were down four runs and scored a pair to
pull within striking distance. Pennolino singled to start the
frame, and moved to second when Allison Breakey was hit by a pitch.
Pinch-hitter Catherine Pastor then singled, and on an ensuing error
Pennolino scored to put Queens on the board. Two batters later,
Faith Tessmer singled to left field to score Breakey and cut the
AIC lead to 4-2. However, the Yellow Jackets induced outs from QC
in the next two at-bats to end the rally.
American International touched up Tessmer (5.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1
ER, 3 BB, K) for one run in the top of the fifth inning, and two
more in the sixth. Julia Carbone came on in relief with the bases
loaded and one down, and got the next to batters to hit into
infield outs to end the Yellow Jackets' stretch. AIC tacked
on one more run in the top of the seventh frame before Queens
pushed its two-run rally in the bottom half of the inning.
Samantha Stallone and Anniela Vaccaro added one hit each for the
Knights in the contest.
Game 2: Queens 5, American International 3
Pennolino capped a four-run sixth inning for Queens that broke
open a 1-1 tie, and starting pitcher Bryttne Santana held tough for
a complete-game nine-hitter with two earned runs and three
strikeouts to give the Knights their first win of the season.
Vaccaro also stood out offensively in the contest, going 2-for-4
with a double and one run scored.
AIC picked up one run in the bottom of the first inning, before
Queens knotted the contest at 1-all in the top of the fourth. After
a Vaccaro double and a walk from Caroline Carbone (1-for-2), both
were erased on a play which Kaitlyn Crowley reached on an infield
error. Fortunately, Tessmer stepped up and doubled to center field,
plating Crowley with the tying run in the process.
The top of the sixth inning provided the Knights with the
opportunity to break the game open as they sent eight batters to
the dish. Breakey was hit by a pitch, and moved up 120 feet when
Vaccaro and Caroline Carbone hit back-to-back infield singles.
After two consecutive outs, Breakey scored when Santana reached on
an infield error. Pennolino then followed up with the dagger of the
contest, lacing a bases-clearing triple that pushed the QC lead to
four runs.
AIC plated one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, before
Santana pitched out of a one-out, two-runners-on jam. After the
Yellow Jackets then added one run in the seventh stanza, Santana
induced a groundout to Alexandra Drago (1-for-3) at third base to
end the contest.
Stallone went 1-for-3 with a stolen base from her leadoff spot
for the Knights.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's Queens squad wraps up its
Florida trip Monday afternoon (March 7), when they take on
Assumption College for a doubleheader at the National Training
Center. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
