FLUSHING, N.Y. – Megan White went a combined 5-for-6 with a double, homer, three runs and as many RBI, while teammate Kaitlyn Crowley was 3-for-6 with a double, homer and four RBI, Saturday afternoon, as the Queens College softball team moved its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Chestnut Hill (3-7). The Knights (6-6) picked up an 8-0, five-inning victory in the first game behind a two-hit, seven-strikeout performance from Faith Tessmer in the pitching circle, and used a five-run fifth inning to capture a 7-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Game 1: Queens 8, Chestnut Hill 0
Crowley (2-for-3, 4 RBI) jacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to push the Knights' lead to 3-0, and added a two-run double in the third to extend the QC advantage. Tessmer had an economical display of pitching for the Knights, as she allowed no walks and threw 47 of her 64 pitches for strikes. She faced just two batters over the minimum, and did not allow a runner into scoring position after a lead-off double to start the contest.
Samantha Stallone led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second base and moved to third on a right-side groundout by Allison Breakey (1-for-3, RBI). Anniela Vaccaro brought home Stallone on a sacrifice fly, before Caroline Carbone (2 R) preceded Crowley's dinger by reaching on an infield error.
White (2-for-3, 2 R), playing in her first doubleheader of the season, led off the fourth with a single up the middle, and advanced 120 feet on a fielder's choice and sacrifice bunt, respectively. Breakey then stepped up with a clean single to left, pushing the QC edge to 6-0.
The bottom of the fifth inning brought the mercy rule into effect, as White smacked a two-out double over the left fielder and came home when Catherine Pastor's single fell in front of an outfielder to end the contest.
Game 2: Queens 7, Chestnut Hill 4
QC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in support of starting pitcher Julia Carbone (3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, BB), when Bryttne Santana (2-for-3, 3 R) reached on a fielder's choice and eventually came around to score on Melissa Natale's (2 RBI) single up the middle off Griffins starter Cassie Benson (4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB).
After the visitors scored three times to take a two-run lead in the fourth inning, Queens responded with one run in its half of the fourth to pull within a 3-2 score. Santana led off with a double to right-center field, moved to third on a wild pitch, and came home on Natale's sacrifice fly.
Chestnut Hill went to the bullpen to start the fifth inning when Brittany DeGarmo came on for the Griffins. At that point, the Knights' offense broke out for five runs on five hits to take the lead for good. Vaccaro reached on a fielder's choice, and stole second base. Following a single to right-center by Crowley, White launched her first homer of the season to dead center field, giving QC the lead at 5-3. Carla Pennolino continued the onslaught, singling to left field and scoring on Santana's double to left-center. Santana then pushed across Queens' seventh run of the contest when Caroline Carbone singled through the left side of the infield.
The Griffins pulled to within 7-4 on a one-out solo homer by Gina Cavallo, but could get no closer.
Nicole Turato earned the win in relief of Julia Carbone for Queens, firing 1.2 innings of one-hit, two-strikeout ball.
Head coach Brian DeMasters' Knights are back in action Sunday afternoon, when they play host to Holy Family in a 12 noon doubleheader.
