BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Freshman catcher Kaitlyn Crowley
went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run homer Thursday
afternoon, as the Queens College softball team (4-6) completed a
doubleheader sweep at Bloomfield College (6-3) with a 7-1 victory
in game two. The visiting Knights also won the opening contest by
an 8-6 edge, as Allison Breakey
drove in three runs in the game.
Game 1: Queens 8, Bloomfield 6
The Knights took control by registering eight runs in the first
four innings of play, and held off a furious comeback attempt by
the Deacons to secure the win. Leadoff hitter Samantha
Stallone was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs
scored, while Anniela Vaccaro
(walk) reached base safely for the ninth straight contest and stole
two bases. Queens took advantage of five hits and six walks in the
game.
Vaccaro and Stallone both scored in the top of the first after
reaching on walks, before the lineup turned over and scored three
times in the second inning to push the QC lead to 5-0. Faith Tessmer
singled to lead off, and moved to third two batters later when
Stallone reached on an error. Breakey then stepped up to single
home both runner, before scoring one batter later when Vaccaro
reached on an outfield error.
Breakey then garnered a RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth
inning to score pitcher Bryttne Santana
(CG, 11 H, 2 BB, 6 ER, 6 K), before Melissa Natale
came home in the next plate appearance when Vaccaro grounded out to
third. Stallone then scored on a passed ball to round out the
Knights' scoring.
Bloomfield did not go quietly, however, as they came back for
three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Deacons then
tacked on one more in the fifth, plated two runs in the sixth
inning and placed the potential go-ahead run at bat with two on and
two down in the latter frame. But Santana bore down and struck out
the next BC hitter, and sat the hosts down in order in the seventh
to move to 3-2 on the year.
Game 2: Queens 7, Bloomfield 1
Crowley and Carla Pennolino
(2-for-4) each scored twice for Queens, while starting pitcher
Faith Tessmer picked up her first win of the season by firing six
innings of four-hit, two-walk, one-strikeout ball.
The teams traded one run apiece in the second inning, as Catherine
Pastor doubled home Crowley in the top half for QC. The Knights
then broke the game open with three runs each in the third and
sixth innings of play. Vaccaro (1-for-4, double) brought home
Stallone (1-for-3, 2 SB) with a right-side groundout, Crowley
doubled home Caroline
Carbone (1-for-3) and Pennolino to push the score to 4-1 in
favor of the visitors.
In the sixth stanza, Pennolino led off with a single before
Crowley jacked one out to push the score to 6-1. Two batters later,
Pastor doubled and then traded places with Natale on the latter's
double to account for the final score.
Head coach Brian DeMasters's Queens side will open its home
schedule Saturday afternoon (Mar. 19), when it plays host to a 1
p.m. doubleheader against Chestnut Hill.
