FLUSHING, N.Y. – Wrapping up their East Coast Conference series on Sunday, the Queens College baseball team hosted the College of Staten Island at Hennekens Stadium, completing a suspended contest from March 20 before taking the series finale.
With the pair of victories, the Knights improve to 7-15 in ECC play with two conference series remaining.
March 20 Suspended Game Recap – Queens 8, Staten Island 7 (Extra Innings)
Senior right-hander
Johnny Dezago (Howard Beach, N.Y.) set the tone by retiring the Dolphins in order, giving Queens a chance to walk it off.
Sophomore
Henry Tolentino (Bronx, N.Y.) sparked the rally with a leadoff single, and junior
Thomas McElwee (West Islip, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line to move Tolentino into scoring position.
With no outs, junior
Christian Aguilar (New York, N.Y.) delivered the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Tolentino for the 8-7 victory.
April 19 Game Four Recap – Queens 17, Staten Island 4 (5 Innings)
In a rain-shortened contest, Queens totaled 10 hits and drew 11 walks to score 17 runs. Sophomore
Peter Bounougias (Plainview, N.Y.), senior
Vincent Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.), and senior
Connor Waiting (Seaford, N.Y.) combined for 11 RBI, with Bounougias posting a season-best five RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, the Knights erupted in the second, sending 20 batters to the plate and scoring a season-high 15 runs. Queens recorded eight hits and eight walks in the frame, with every starter crossing the plate. The inning was highlighted by Bounougias' three-run home run to right-center as part of an early eight-run surge.
Staten Island responded with three hits, including two doubles, to cut the deficit to 15-2 in the bottom of the second.
Queens answered in the fourth as Mallon launched his team-leading 10th home run of the season to extend the lead to 16-2. Waiting added a two-out RBI triple in the fifth to push the advantage to 17-2.
The Dolphins plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 17-4, but worsening weather forced the game to be called after five innings, making it official and securing Queens' seventh ECC win of the season.
Next Pitch
The Knights travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for a four-game ECC series against D'Youville University at Sal Maglie Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for Friday, April 24 at 3:00 p.m.
