Cain, Donahue Lead Knights to Non-Conference Doubleheader Split with Jefferson

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning home Thursday afternoon, the Queens College softball team welcomed the Thomas Jefferson University Rams for a non-conference doubleheader.

Queens rallied to take game one, 2-1, as junior Kadie Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third inning. The Rams responded in the nightcap to salvage the split with a 10-2 victory.

With the split, Queens moves to 8-19 on the season.

Game One Recap – Queens 2, Jefferson 1

Rookie righty Nellie Donahue (Levittown, N.Y.) got the start and worked out of an early jam despite the Rams striking first. With two outs in the opening frame, Jefferson used a walk and two singles to take a 1-0 lead.

The Knights answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Allie Parascandola (East Quogue, N.Y.) led off with a single and moved into scoring position before Cain's single through the right side put runners on the corners. Cain later came around to score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.

Donahue settled in from there, tossing back-to-back clean innings in the second and third to keep the game even.

In the bottom of the third, the top of the lineup delivered. Parascandola recorded her second hit of the game and stole second, and a walk put two runners on with no outs. Cain came through once again, ripping an RBI single up the middle to score Parascandola and give Queens a 2-1 lead.

From there, Donahue took control. The rookie retired nine straight batters and allowed just one more hit the rest of the way. She closed the game with three consecutive scoreless innings, finishing with a three-hit complete game to earn her fifth win of the season.

Game Two Recap – Queens 2, Jefferson 10

After a scoreless first inning, the Rams broke through in the second, scoring three runs on four singles and a Queens error to take a 3-0 lead.

Queens responded in the bottom of the third. Rookie catcher Brooke Waiting (Seaford, N.Y.) led off with a single and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, junior Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA.) kept the inning alive with a single to put runners on the corners.

Cain delivered again, lacing a two-RBI triple up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-2 after three innings.

However, Jefferson pulled away over the final three frames, adding insurance runs to secure the doubleheader split.
