Harkins, Waiting Lead Knights’ Offensive Surge in Doubleheader with Goldey-Beacom

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – After a week off due to unplayable field conditions, the Queens College baseball team returned to action Saturday afternoon at Diamond Nation, taking on the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning in a non-conference doubleheader.

Over the two games, the Knights' offense produced 14 runs on 23 hits. Rookie center fielder John Harkins (Babylon, N.Y.) led the way, combining for five hits, including his first career home run, while driving in two runs and scoring three times. Senior designated hitter Connor Waiting (Seaford, N.Y.) added three hits, all extra-base hits, including two home runs and four RBI while scoring twice. Senior right fielder Vincent Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded five hits in the twin bill, including three doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Mallon highlighted the opener with a four-hit performance.

Game One Recap

In the opener, Queens fell behind 1–0 before responding in the bottom of the third. Harkins delivered his first career home run, launching a two-run blast over the left-field wall to give the Knights a 2–1 lead.

Goldey-Beacom answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the advantage, but Waiting quickly evened the score in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 3–3.

The Lightning broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs to take an 8–3 lead and later added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Queens attempted a late comeback, scoring two runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth highlighted by a two-run home run from junior left fielder Christian Aguilar (New York, N.Y.).

However, the rally fell short as the Knights dropped the opener, 10–7.

Game Two Recap

In game two, Goldey-Beacom struck first, building a 3–0 lead through three and a half innings.

The Knights responded in the bottom of the third as rookie infielder Justin Chong (Queens Village, N.Y.) launched his first career home run. Mallon followed with an RBI double to pull Queens within one before Waiting connected on his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left field, to give the Knights a 5–3 lead.

The Lightning trimmed the deficit with a run in the fourth inning, but Queens extended its advantage in the fifth with two runs to make it 7–4.

Goldey-Beacom would complete the comeback late, scoring three unanswered runs to secure an 8–7 victory and sweep the doubleheader.
