PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Opening the week in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon in Pleasantville, the Queens College baseball team matched up against the Setters of Pace University at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
The Knights offense was limited to four hits with graduate student left fielder
Penn Sealey (Raleigh, N.C.) (1-3 AB, BB), senior second baseman
Robert Jacobsen (Temecula, Calif.) (1-3 AB, BB), rookie catcher
Jake Levesque (Pinellas Park, Fla.) (1-2 AB) and junior shortstop
Nick Piazza (Queens, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) knocking in four singles.
But the Knights offense would leave six runners stranded on base and untimely base running would hurt the comeback attempt as Queens fell to the final score of 3-0 Wednesday afternoon.
GAME RECAP
The Setters went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning using a leadoff double before scoring on a sac fly.
The Knights would earn their first baserunner as junior third baseman
Yoskar Guzman (Richmond Hill, N.Y.) earned a walk to begin the top of the third inning. As a sac bunt from Levesque advanced Guzman into scoring position, the Setters' defense would complete a double play to end the frame and the scoring threat.
In the top of the fourth with one out, Queens would get a runner on second behind a fielding error but base running would hurt the scoring opportunity as the Setters were able to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.
With the Knights pitching keeping their deficit at 1-0, Queens would get another base runner in the top of the fifth and their first hit of the afternoon as Jacobsen singled to right center with one out. But once again a double play would end the inning as the home kept their 1-0 lead intact.
As junior righty
John Keane (Wading River, N.Y.) and his defense worked out of a single and walk to keep the 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth, the Knights would threaten in the top of the sixth.
With one out, Levesque lined a single to right field before Piazza reached first base on a fielding error and senior center field
Nick O'Conner (Wantagh, N.Y.) back in the lineup after missing the last 10 games earned a walk as Queens loaded the bases with one out. But once again the Setters defense would avoid trouble as they got their third double play of the game to end the threat.
The Setters would increase their lead to 3-0 as they added a run in the seventh and eighth.
The Knights would get a total of four base runners over the final two innings of play but each time Setters would avoid trouble as they defeated Queens to the final score of 3-0 and take the first meeting of the year.
