NIAGARA FALL, N.Y. – The four-game East Coast Conference series wrapped up on Sunday afternoon for the Queens College baseball team as the Knights matched up against the Saints of D'Youville University at Sal Maglie Stadium.
The Knights recorded nine hits led by four multi-hit performances with senior third baseman
Jaden Rivera (Queens Village, N.Y) (2-5 AB, 3RBI, R), junior second baseman
Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, RBI), redshirt junior shortstop
Francis Segarra (Bronxville, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2R), and senior center fielder
Phillip Krpata (Farmingdale, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B, RBI, 2R) combining for eight hits, five RBI, and five runs scored, while senior catcher
Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (1-4 AB) recorded the other hit on the day.
But with the Knights leading 6-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Saints rallied to defeat the Queens to the final score of 9-6 Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Knights moved to 16-13 overall and 7-5 in ECC play.
GAME FOUR RECAP (QUEENS 6, D'YOUVILLE 9)
The Knights opened the game on a strong note as Rivera and Cisco knocked in back-to-back singles with Cisco's single advancing Rivera to third base. As the Saints got the first out, junior first baseman
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) would put the Knights up 1-0 with a sac fly out to right field providing enough depth for Rivera to score from third base.
Game four starter rookie righty
Peter Nenadich III (Bayside, N.Y.) would work a clean first inning before he worked around a two-out single and walk in the bottom of the second to keep the Knights 1-0 lead intact.
Krpata opened the top of the third with a double to left center but as Rivera flew out to right field, it would allow the center fielder to advance to third base. With a runner in scoring position, a RBI single from Cisco to left center would put the Knights up 2-0.
In the bottom of the third with one out, the Saints would record back-to-back singles before a fielder's choice brought in the first run of the game for the home side before Nenadich left two runners on base to keep the Knights ahead by one run, 2-1.
With one out in the top of the fourth, Queens would load the bases behind a single-walk-single before Krpata put the Knights up the 3-1 with a sac fly out to center fielder as Segarra scored.
But the Saints would tie the game 3-3 in the home half of the fourth.
With the game tied 3-3, both sides would be kept off the scoreboard in the fifth inning of play.
In the top of the sixth, with one out, Queens would load the bases behind a Segarra single, walk, and a fielding error. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rivera would clear the bases with a three-RBI single to right center as Queens reclaimed the lead for a 6-3 advantage.
Leading 6-3 Nenadich would retire the Saints in order in the sixth inning before he worked around a two-out single in the seventh to keep the Knights ahead as the rookie completed a career-best seven complete innings on the mound.
But back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the eighth would see Nenadich's outing come to an end as the Knights turned to the bullpen to complete the eighth inning of play.
Just as the Knights rallied in game three of the series Saturday afternoon, the Saints would rally Sunday afternoon to score six runs on three hits, two walks, and two fielding errors as they took a 9-6 advantage heading into the top of the ninth.
The Knights would be retired in order in the top of the ninth as Queens fell to the final score of 9-6 Sunday afternoon and dropped their first ECC series of the year.
