FLUSHING, N.Y. – After rain canceled games over the weekend, the Queens College baseball team welcomed the Eagles of Post University to Hennekens Stadium for a non-conference game Monday afternoon.
The Knights offense would tally seven hits led by redshirt junior shortstop
Francis Segarra (Bronxville, N.Y.) (3-of-4 AB) second three-hit performance of the year, while four Knights in junior second baseman
Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (1-of-4 AB), junior first baseman
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) (1-of-3 AB, BB), senior catcher
Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (1-of-2 AB), and junior DH
Elquin Rodriguez (Washington Heights, N.Y.) (1-of-4 AB) knocked in singles but the offense would leave six base runners stranded as Queens fell to the final score of 3-0 to conclude the homestand.
Rooke righty
Peter Nenadich III (Bayside, N.Y.) (L, 1-1 4.0 IP, 6H, 3ER, 4BB, 4K) suffered his first loss in his first career start as the Eagles scored three runs through the first four innings of play. While out of the bullpen, the junior duo of lefty
Nate Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J.) (2.2 IP, 2BB, 2K) and righty
Caleb Cassie (Vancouver, B.C.) (2.1 IP, H, BB, 2K) kept the Eagles offense quiet allowing one hit and three walks to with four strikeouts.
GAME RECAP
The Eagles opened the scoring as they tallied a run through the first two innings of play.
Queens would get a chance to cut into their deficit in the bottom of the third as with one out, Barreiros tallied a single through the right side. But a fielder's choice would erase Barreiros at second as graduate student center fielder
Phillip Krpata (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached first base safely. With two outs, a single from Cisco would give the Knights two base runners.
With the Knights threatening, Segarra would record his second hit of the afternoon out to right field and looked to have gotten the Knights' first run on board but a timely throw from the Eagles would get Krpata out at home to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.
Post would get another run in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead which would prove to be enough as the Knights offense was shut out for the first time this year.
Next Pitch
Queens opens a four-game non-conference series in Hockessin, Del. against the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College beginning with a Saturday (Mar. 9) afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
