GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Continuing non-conference play, the Queens College baseball team made the local trip to Garden City to match up against the Panthers of Adelphi University at Bonomo Memorial Field Tuesday afternoon.
Playing in sunny conditions, the Knights offense tallied 10 hits led by sophomore right fielder
Jorsixt Jimenez (Flushing, N.Y.) (3-4 AB, 2B, 2RBI, R, BB) third multi-hit and fifth multi-RBI game of the year, junior third baseman
Robert Jacobsen (Temecula, CA) (2-4 AB, 2B, 2RBI, BB) notched his team-leading fifth multi-hit game of the year and senior catcher
Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2R, BB) recorded his third multi-hit game of the year as the trio combined for seven hits, three RBI, and four runs scored.
Senior second baseman
Jaden Rivera (Queens Village, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, 2RBI, BB) notched his first multi-RBI game of the season, while the duo of senior center fielder
Phillip Krpata (Farmingdale, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, BB) and sophomore
Joey Patane (Commack, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, BB) knocked in a single apiece.
On the mound, six Knights would hurl their arms with junior righty
Evan Christopher (North Babylon, N.Y.) (L, 0-1 2.0 IP 7H, 6ER) earning his first career start but a tough second inning would see the Panthers score six runs on seven hits off the righty. While senior righty
Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) (2.0 IP, 3H, 3ER, 2BB, 2K), junior lefty
Nate Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J.) (1.0 IP), junior righty
Joshuel Rodriguez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) (1.0 IP, 2H), sophomore righty
John Keane (Wading River, N.Y) (1.0 IP, 2H, ER, K) and freshman lefty
Vinay Patel (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (1.0 IP, BB, K) combined to limit the Panthers to seven hits, three runs with four strikeouts on the afternoon.
But the Knights would leave eight base runners stranded as Queens rally fell short to the final score of 9-5 Tuesday afternoon.
GAME RECAP
Queens opened the first inning with a walk and a single, but the Panthers were able to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.
Adelphi would strike first in the home half of the second inning as they scored six runs on seven hits to take a 6-0 lead after two complete innings of play.
The Knights wasted no time responding as Barreiros opened the top half of the third with his third double of the year. But the Panthers would get the next two batters before Jacobsen recorded his team-leading fifth double and his fifth RBI of the year to left center as the Knights got on the scoreboard.
As Queens prevented Adelphi from scoring in the bottom of the third, the Knights opened the top of the fourth with a walk and a single from Patane as the visitors looked to cut into the scoring. But the home side would avoid trouble with a double play before getting the fourth batter to strikeout to end the inning.
The Panthers would use a walk and hit by pitch to their advantage in the home half of the fourth to tack on two more runs as they took an 8-1 lead after four complete innings of play.
After a scoreless fifth for both sides, Jacobsen opened the sixth with a single to left field before Jimenez earned a walk. The Panthers would get the first out of the inning before Patane earned a walk to load the bases for the Knights. With one out, Rivera laced a two-RBI single through the left side as Queens cut their deficit down to five runs, 8-3.
With one out and runners on first and second, the Adelphi defense would execute another double play to avoid further trouble to get out of the inning.
As Queens executed a double play in the home half to sixth to stay in the game, the Knights responded in the top of the seventh. Barreiros recorded his second hit of the afternoon with a single up the middle before the Panthers got the next two batters out.
With two outs, Jacobsen worked a walk before a double from Jimenez looked to have scored two runs for the Knights but it would be a ruled a ground-rule double as the Knights were only able to score one run but they would be able to cut their deficit in half to the score of 8-4.
The Panthers would get an insurance run off a wild pitch to take a 9-4 lead.
In the top of the eighth, with one out, Rivera would earn a walk but for the third time on the day the Panthers would get another double play to keep the Knights from cutting into their advantage.
After the Knights worked out of a two-out fielding error and a walk to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard, Queens would go into the top of the ninth trailing 9-4.
Looking to rally, Barreiros worked a walk to reach base for the third time on the day before the Panthers got the first out. Krpata would extend the game with a single as the Knights had runners on first and second.
However the Panthers would get their second strikeout of the inning before Jimenez recorded his third hit of the day with a RBI single up the middle as Queens cut the score down to 9-5. But the Panthers would take the first game of the series as the Knights rally fell short to the final score of 9-5 Tuesday afternoon.

The Knights now turn their attention to a four-game weekend series in Flushing against the Greyhounds of Assumption University
(3-8 Overall Record) in non-conference play. Game one of the series is set for Saturday (Mar. 16) afternoon at noon.
