Balanced Scoring Leads Women’s Volleyball to Sweep over Roberts Wesleyan Sunday Afternoon

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to conclude their regular season home portion of the 2024 schedule on a strong note the Queens College women's volleyball team welcomed the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University to town in East Coast Conference action.
 
Five Knights recorded five or more kills led by rookie Madi Hathaway (Edmond, OK) notching nine kills, rookie Jonaida Donowa (Porter, TX) tallied seven, the junior duo Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA), and Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FLA) tallied in six each and senior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) recorded five kills as the Knights completed the sweep over the Redhawks in three sets.
 
With the win, the Knights improved to 18-9 overall and 8-2 in ECC play on the year. With the sweep, Queens completed their third ECC series sweep of the year and earned their third straight season sweep over the Redhawks.
 
Prior to the match Athletic Director Robert Twible, head coach Stefan Leger, and the women's volleyball team honored four graduating seniors Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain), Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA), Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) and Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) for their dedication to Queens College and the women's volleyball program.

MATCH RECAP vs. Roberts Wesleyan University (3-0, | Set Scores: 25-22, 25-22, 25-19)

As Queens opened the first with a 2-1 advantage, the Redhawks answered with an 8-2 run to take a 9-4 lead.
 
But the Knights led by Franco and Osterhoudt would help Queens respond as the home side went on a 9-4 run to tie the first set at 13-13.
 
Roberts Wesleyan responded with a 4-2 run to take a 17-15 advantage before the trio of senior Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain), Franco and Osterhoudt recorded three straight kills to take an 18-17 lead.
 
Back-to-back Knights errors would see the Redhawks take a 19-18 lead before a Redhawks service error started a final run of 7-3 for the Queens with Hathaway recording two kills as the home side took a 25-22 first set victory and 1-0 match lead.
 
For the second straight set, the Redhawks would open with a big lead as they led 11-4 before Queens started to cut into their deficit.
 
Trailing 16-10, a Redhawks service error combined with Hathaway notching back-to-back service aces and a kill from Conrad, Queens would start a 10-2 run as they took a 20-18 lead.
 
As a Redhawks kill stopped Queens' run and cut the lead down to 20-19, Osterhoudt and Hathaway would help the Knights start a final run of 5-3 with a block from Osterhoudt and Hathaway giving Queens set point before a kill from Conrad clinched the second set to the score of 25-22 and take a 2-0 match lead.
 
The Knights began the third set with a 4-1 advantage with Hathaway recording a kill and junior Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) recording a service ace.
 
But the Redhawks would respond with a 5-1 as they took a 6-5 lead. A solo block from Donowa started a Knights' run of 12-4 run as Queens took a 17-10 lead.
 
However, the visitors responded with a 9-2 run as they tied the third set at 19-19.
 
In a back-and-forth match, a Redhawks service error would start a final run of 6-0 for Queens with Franco recording two service aces, to go with two kills and a block from Donowa as the Knights earned a 25-19 third set victory, and completed the ECC series sweep over the Redhawks to earn their 18th victory of the year and eighth in ECC play.

  • Rookie Hathaway paced the Knights' offense recording nine kills on a hitting % of .444 to go with four blocks, three service aces, two digs, and three assists.
  • Rookie Donowa notched seven kills on a hitting % of .438 and three blocks.
  • Junior Osterhoudt recorded six kills on a hitting % of .462 and seven blocks.
  • Junior Conrad recorded six kills, two blocks, and one dig.
  • Senior Franco recorded five kills, 11 digs, three service aces, and two assists.
  • Senior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) recorded 25 assists, five digs, two kills, and one service ace in the victory.
  • Junior Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) recorded 12 digs, three assists, and one service ace in the victory.

NEXT MATCH

The Knights conclude the regular season in a two-match road stand beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 13 as they travel to Sparkill, N.Y. as they matchup against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College in East Coast Conference play. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
