Season-High 15 Blocks in Sparkill as Women’s Volleyball Earns 19th Overall Victory of the Year, Knights Complete ECC Series Sweep over STAC Wednesday Evening

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Opening a two-match road stand to conclude their regular season, the Queens College women's volleyball team traveled to Sparkill for an East Coast Conference match against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College inside Aquinas Hall Wednesday evening.
 
In an all-round performance, rookie Madi Hathaway (Edmond, OK) led the way recording her seventh triple-double of the year, while the trio of junior Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FLA), junior Maya Angelova (Kyustendil, Bulgaria) and senior Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain) combined for 19 blocks as the Knights earned a four set victory over the Spartans.
 
With the win, the Knights improved to 19-9 overall and 9-2 in ECC play on the year. With the sweep, Queens completed their fourth ECC series sweep of the year and earned their second straight season sweep over the Spartans.

MATCH RECAP vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College (3-1 | Set Scores: 25-18, 17-25, 25-16, 25-12)

The home side opened the first set taking a 4-1 lead before a solo block from Hathaway started a 5-0 run for Queens as the Knights took a 6-4 lead.
 
The Spartans would respond by taking three of the next five points, but with the Knights holding a slim lead of 8-7, a kill from junior Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) started a 6-0 run as Conrad recorded two service aces, a kill from Angelova and a double block from Angelova and Cervera to help the Knights extend their lead to 14-7.
 
But the home side battled back using a 4-1 run before the Knights recorded four kills and a solo block to take a commanding lead of 20-12 forcing the Spartans to use their final time of the first set.
 
The timeout would help break Queens' momentum as the Spartans went on a 4-1 run but the Knights would close the first set on a 3-2 run as Osterhoudt recorded her third kill of the set before Conrad's third service ace of the set sealed the first set victory to the score of 25-18 as Queens took a 1-0 lead match.
 
Queens opened the second set taking a 5-2 advantage before errors hurt the Knights as the Spartans went on a 9-1 run to take an 11-6 lead.
 
But the Knights would respond back using a 6-1 run with junior Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) recording a service ace and the junior duo of Osterhoudt and Elizabeth Cerullo (Saint James, N.Y.) combining for three kills as Queens tied the set at 12-12.
 
Both teams would trade the next six points as the second set saw a total of six ties and two lead changes. With the set tied at 15-15, it would be the Spartans who would end the set on a 10-2 run as the Knights combined eight attacking errors as the home side tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 second victory.
 
With the match tied at 1-1, Hathaway began the third set recording three straight kills before the junior duo of Angelova and Conrad combined for three kills as the Knights took an 8-3 lead forcing a Spartans timeout.
 
The timeout would help the Spartans go on a 6-3 run as they cut the Knights' lead down to two, 11-9, but Hathaway and Osterhoudt would combine for a 4-1 run as the visitors extended their lead to 15-10.
 
As both sides exchanged the next eight points and with the Queens leading 19-14, a kill from Cervera would start a final third run of 6-2 before Hathaway sealed the third set with her seventh kill of the set as the Knights took a 2-1 lead with a third set victory of 25-16.
 
Both teams exchanged the first 10 points of the fourth and final set before senior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) notched back-to-back kills to start a 5-1 run as the Knights took a 10-6 lead.
 
The Spartans responded with a 4-2 run as they cut Queens' lead down to 12-10 before Angelova and Cervera took over at the net with the duo combining for seven blocks to go with two service aces from Hathaway as Queens extended their lead to 19-10.
 
Queens would seal the match with a final run of 6-2 as rookie Olivia Hyman (Forest Hills, N.Y.)  recorded a service ace, and the trio of Cervea, Hathaway, and Osterhoudt combining for four kills as the Knights earned a 25-12 fourth set victory, and completed the ECC series sweep over the Spartans to earn their 19th victory of the year and ninth in ECC play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Rookie Hathaway paced the Knights' offense recording her seventh triple-double of the year a team-high 13 kills on a hitting % of .323, 15 assists, 12 digs, three service aces, and a career-best five blocks.
  • Junior Osterhoudt recorded eight kills on a hitting % of .412 to go with three blocks, three digs, and two service aces.
  • Senior Franco recorded five kills, 15 digs, one assist, and one service ace.
  • Junior Conrad recorded five kills, a team-high four service aces, two digs, and one block.
  • Senior Cervera recorded three kills and a career-best five blocks.
  • Junior Angelova recorded three kills on a hitting % of .333 and notched a new program record of 11 total blocks as she notched three solo blocks and eight block assists.
    • The 11 total blocks break the previous record of 10 set by Deja Hooks on October 27, 2014, against Caldwell.
    • The eight block assists are the second most in program history.
  • Senior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) recorded 18 assists, and five digs in the victory.
  • Junior Munn recorded a match-high 19 digs, four assists, and two service aces in the victory.

NEXT MATCH

The Knights conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 16 as they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. as they match up against the Mavericks of Mercy University in East Coast Conference play. The first serve is set for noon.
