FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to Flushing to continue the four-game East Coast Conference series, the Queens College baseball team
(19-8 overall, 4-3 ECC) welcomed the Lions of Molloy University
(21-11 overall, 9-2) to Hennekens Stadium for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
In game one, the Knights offense tallied 12 hits led by a three-hit performance from sophomore
Marc Cisco (3-3 AB, R, 2BB), while the trio of freshman
Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, RBI), senior
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, R), and freshman
Andrew Ramirez (Walnut, CA) (2-4 AB, 2 2B, 3RBI, R) combined for six hits.
While senior
Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) (1-6 AB, HR, 3RBI, R) and Ramirez combined for six RBI in game one.
In the nightcap, Fontana
(2-4 AB, 2B, HR, 3RBI, R) and senior
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, HR, 2RBI, R) combined for five RBI.
As the Knights worked out of a one-out walk in the opening frame of game one, Queens was unable to take advantage of a one-out walk and a single as the Lions induced a double play to end the home half of the first.
The Lions would open the scoring in the second inning as they took a 1-0 lead on two hits.
Trailing 1-0 to begin the top of the fifth, a fielders' choice on base loaded would see things unravel for the Knights as the visitors added eight runs to take a 9-0 lead.
But the Knights would respond right away in the home half of the fifth as sophomore
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, 2R, 3BB) earned one of his three walks to begin the inning before Ramirez doubled down the right field line to advance Filip to third base.
As a walk loaded the bases, a fielding error by the Lions would allow the Knights to get on the scoreboard as they cut the deficit down to 9-2.
As Cisco got hit by pitch to keep the bases loaded, Jimenez would bring in the third run of the inning on a sac fly to left field as Queens were within six, 9-3.
The deficit would be trimmed down to 9-6 as Fontana blasted a three-run blast over right-center field to extend the inning. But the Knights would leave the bases loaded as the Lions escaped further damage.
But the Lions would take game one as they added seven runs in the top of the seventh to take a 16-6 lead before earning the victory to the final score of 16-10.
Game two would be a game to forget for the Knights as they committed six fielding errors.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead on two fielding errors after the top of the first inning. Queens would quickly cut the deficit down to 2-1 as Cisco
(1-3 AB, 2R, BB) singled through the right side before a RBI double down the left field line cut the Knights deficit down to 2-1 after the completion of the first inning.
But another fielding error would hurt the Knights as their deficit grew to 4-1.
Cisco began the home half of the third with a walk before Fontana homered for the second straight game as Queens trimmed their deficit down to 4-3.
The Knights would escape a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth before they took a 5-4 lead on Rodopoulos's two-run blast to left field.
But three more errors over the next three innings of play would see the visitors reclaim the lead before earning a 7-5 victory over the Knights in the nightcap.
