PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Returning to Non-Conference play, the Queens College softball team traveled to Pleasantville for a doubleheader against the Setters of Pace University Wednesday afternoon.
Playing in cloudy and windy conditions, the Knights dropped game one to the score of 5-0 as they were limited to three hits. While in the nightcap, Queens would tally five hits but would drop game two to the final score of 3-1.
In game one, the Knights were led by senior
Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (1-3 AB), senior
Katherine Gallagher (Orlando, FL.) (1-3 AB), and freshman
Allie Parascandola (East Quogue, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) as the trio combined for the lone hits.
Freshman
Sam Voskinarian (East Northport, N.Y.) made her second appearance out of the bullpen as the rookie pitched a career-high 3.0 innings of work allowing two hits, one walk, and struck out one batter.
But the Knights would leave five base runners stranded as they were unable to get the offense going to drop game one.
In game two, Queens combined for five hits led by junior
Dyana Budakowski (Washingtonville, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, RBI), Grimshaw
(1-3 AB), sophomore
Dani Roselli (Levittown, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, BB), sophomore
Emma Zumpol (Patchogue, N.Y.) (1-2 AB) and sophomore
Jillian Cosme (Franklin Square, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) as Budakowski tallied the lone RBI for the Knights.
The Knights looked to threaten in the top of the first inning as Budakowski opened the game with a single before advancing to second on a sac bunt. Grimshaw looked to have given Queens an early 1-0 lead with a single to right field but Budakowski would be called out at home as the Setters were able to keep the game scoreless.
As Roselli earned a two-out walk to give Queens two runners on base, the Setters would once again avoid any damage.
In the circle, senior
Myaisha Kelly (Albany, N.Y.) retired five Setters in a row before the home side tallied a single with two outs in the bottom of the second. But Kelly would keep the offense at bay as she got the fourth batter of the inning to pop up at second base.
As Kelly worked four straight clean innings to keep the game scoreless, the Knights would open the scoring in the top of the fifth inning.
Rookie
Brianna Call (Fishkill, N.Y.) worked a walk before stealing second base. A bunt single by Zumpol would advance Call to third base as Queens now had runners in the corners.
Budakowski would give Queens a 1-0 lead with a RBI sac fly out to left field as Call scored. A fielding error would allow Queens to have two runners on base before the Setters worked a double play to avoid any further damage.
With two outs in the home half of the fifth, Pace would take a 2-1 lead on back-to-back singles before they added an insurance run in the sixth inning to defeat the Knights to the final score of 3-1.
