FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to East Coast Conference play, the Queens College softball team
(3-5 ECC) welcomed the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College
(7-2 ECC) to Flushing for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
In game one, fielding errors would haunt the Knights before the offense left six base runners stranded as they fell 3-0. While in the nightcap, three more fielding errors would haunt the defense as they dropped game two to the final score of 7-1.
Queens tallied five hits in game one led by a multi-hit performance from senior
Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (2-3 AB) while the trio of senior
Cyarra Alvarado (Coral Springs, FL) (1-3 AB), senior
Katherine Gallagher (Orlando, FL.) (1-3 AB, BB) and sophomore
Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) combined for three hits.
It would be another tough loss for graduate student
Allyson Dilday (Castle Rock, CO.) who was unable to get another offense backing as the Castle Rock native kept her side in the game.
While in game two, junior
Dyana Budakowski (Washingtonville, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, R) and senior
Myaisha Kelly (Albany, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B) combined for four hits, while the duo of Grimshaw
(1-3 AB, RBI) and junior
Jenny Murphy (East Islip, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) recorded a hit apiece.
After two scoreless innings as both starting pitchers left base runners stranded, the Spartans would take advantage of a two-out fielding error to take a 2-0 lead before adding a third run in the top of the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead.
As Grimshaw singled to left center field to open the home half of the fourth, the Spartans would leave Grimshaw stranded on first as the defense retired the next batters in a row.
As the Castle Rock native continued to keep the Spartans' offense at bay and keep their deficit at 3-0, the Knights offense would continue to leave runners on base.
Heading into their final inning at bat, Gallagher began the home half of the seventh with a single through the side before the Spartans got the first out.
Baez would single through the left side as Queens had now had two runners on the corner, but the visitors would retire the next two batters as they took game one to the score of 3-0.
In the nightcap, back-to-back fielding errors to open the first inning would haunt the Knights as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead.
Looking to respond, Budakowski advanced to second on a throwing error to open the home half of the first.
But once again the Spartans would avoid damage to keep their 1-0 lead intact.
Another fielding error to open the second inning would see the visitors extend their lead to 4-0 after the completion of the second inning.
Queens would be held hitless until the home half of the fourth as Budakowski singled up the middle but a strikeout and a double play to end the fourth would keep the visitors in front.
STAC would put away the game in the top of the sixth with three more runs to sweep the Saturday afternoon doubleheader to the final score of 7-1.
