Game Day Preview: Non-Conference DH to Begin the Week Before Softball Returns to ECC Play

FLUSHING, N.Y.  – On Wednesday (Apr. 5) afternoon, the Queens College softball team opens the week with a non-conference doubleheader before concluding the week with back-to-back East Coast Conference doubleheaders.
 
The Knights open the week traveling to Pleasantville as they match up against the Setters of Pace University in non-conference play before returning to the Hudson Valley area with a conference DH against the Mavericks of Mercy College on Thursday (Apr. 6) afternoon. 
 
The week concludes in Flushing as the Knights welcome the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College to town on Saturday (Apr. 8) afternoon in another ECC doubleheader.  
 
Scouting the Knights (Overall Record: 6-18, 3-3 ECC)
 
Last week the Knights went 4-4 on the week earning an ECC DH sweep over College of Staten Island, a split against AIC and Dominican. The week concludes with a DH loss to Molloy. 
 
While on Monday (Apr. 3) afternoon graduate student Allyson Dilday (Castle Rock, Co.) was awarded Conference Pitcher of the Week and senior Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) an ECC Honor Roll spot for the second straight week. (Link)
 
As a team, the Knights are batting .242 with 147 hits, 50 RBI, 56 runs scored, and have earned 34 walks in 608 at-bats
 
Leading the Way
  • Sophomore Caroline Pescatore (North Babylon, N.Y.) leads the offense with a batting average of .327 with 16 hits, one double, nine runs scored, and four RBI.
    • The North Babylon native has tallied three multi-hit games with two three-hit performances. 
  • Junior Dyana Budakowski (Washingtonville, N.Y.) is batting .319 with 22 hits, one double, one triple with two RBI, and a team-high 10 runs scored. 
    • Budakowski has tallied six multi-hit games on the season. 
  • While Grimshaw is batting .308 with a team-high 24 hits, a team-high six doubles, one home run, and has recorded 11 RBI
  • In the pitching circle, Dilday leads the team with four wins to go with a team-high 53 strikeouts.
    • The Castle Rock native has recorded two nine strikeouts outing with one shutout win.

The Setters enter the week with an overall record of 9-13 and are on a two-game losing streak having dropped two games to Bentley over the weekend. 
 
Queens are looking to end a six-game losing streak to the Setters as they search for their first win since the 2-1 victory in Flushing during the 2016 season. 
 
Road games against the Setters have been unkind to the Knights as they hold a record of 1-9 against the non-conference foe.
 
As a team, Pace is batting .231 with 131 hits, 28 doubles, 69 runs scored, and 60 RBI with 53 walks.
 
Gwen Pederson leads the team with a team-high batting average of .293 with 17 hits, 10 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, and eight RBI. While Brianna Shea is batting .291 with 16 hits, 13 runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, and 12 RBI.
 
Gisselle Garcia leads the Setters with five wins in the circle.
 
Mercy College (Overall Record: 7-23 overall, 2-6 ECC)

Mercy enters the week with an overall record of 7-23 and 2-6 in conference play. They are coming off an ECC DH split against the College of Staten Island on Tuesday afternoon. 
 
The Knights are 5-5 in their last 10 matches but hold a record of 18-12 in Dobbs Ferry since the 2000 season. 
 
As a team, the Mavericks are batting .263 with 204 hits, 112 runs scored, 40 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs, 91 RBI, and 51 earned walks. 
 
Cayla Crawford leads the team batting .431 with 31 hits, 21 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 12 RBI. While Sydney Johnston leads the Mavericks with a team-high 21 RBI with a batting average of .270 with 20 hits, seven doubles, two home runs, and eight runs scored. 
 
Alexi Benson and Marina Provencio lead the team with six combined wins in the circle. 
 
Saint Thomas Aquinas College (Overall Record: 12-9, 5-2 ECC)

STAC enters the week with an overall record of 12-9 and 5-2 in ECC play. The Spartans will enter Flushing on a one-game losing streak having fallen to Molloy 8-7 before game two was suspended due to darkness with the game tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth. 
 
The Knights looking to earn their first victory over the Spartans since they won 1-0 on April 22, 2018, as they look to end a 12-game losing streak to their conference foe. 
 
As a team, STAC is batting .280 with 159 hits, 108 runs scored, 17 doubles, five triples, three home runs, and 86 RBI and have earned 50 walks in 568 at-bats.
 
Adriana Coira leads the team batting .319 with 22 hits, 14 runs scored, three triples, and 12 RBI, while Eliana Raposo is batting .299 with 20 hits, 17 runs scored, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, and a team-high 15 RBI. 
 
Carissa Della Vecchia leads the team with seven wins in the circle. 
 
Next Pitch: Following the six-game week, Head coach Amy Delmore and the Knights return to the road as they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. on Sunday (Apr. 16) afternoon as they match up against the Saints of D'Youville University in ECC play. First pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
