DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Queens College softball team concluded their 2025 season in Dobbs Ferry with a Sunday afternoon East Coast Conference doubleheader against Mercy University Mavericks at Smith Field.
Looking to close out the season on a good note, senior
Amanda Baez's (Selden, N.Y.) two run blast in the top of the first inning would prove to be enough before sophomore utility
Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA.) fired a complete game shutout as the Knights earned a 2-0 victory in game one. In the nightcap the trio of Baez, senior right fielder
Caroline Pescatore (North Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop
Kadie Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) combined for five RBI, while junior
Sam Voskinarian (East Northport, N.Y.) put together a complete game in the circle as the Knights completed the Sunday sweep to the final score of 7-2 and earn the series victory.
GAME ONE RECAP
In game one the Knights were led by senior third baseman
Emma Zumpol (Patchogue, N.Y.) (2-3 AB) recording a multi-hit game, junior first baseman
Allie Parascandola (East Quoque, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, R), Campbell
(1-3 AB), Cain
(1-3 AB, 2B) and Baez
(1-3 AB, HR, 2RBI, R) as they combined for six hits with Baez two-run shot being enough.
In the circle, Campbell
(W, 6-14, 7.0 IP, 2H, 2BB, 4K) fired her third career shutout game as she limited the Mavericks to two hits, and two walks while striking out four batters to earn her sixth victory of the year.
Parascandola opened the top of the first reaching base on a fielding error before the Mavericks were able to retire the next two batters in a row. With Baez the fourth batter to come to the plate, the Selden native would foul off the first pitch before she laced a two-run shot over left field to put the Knights up 2-0.
Leading 2-0, Campbell would quickly retire the first two batters before a walk extended the inning. But the sophomore would induce a grounder straight back to her to end the frame.
Campbell would go on to retire eight straight batters including back-to-back clean innings in the second and third.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, a single to right field would break the streak but the sophomore would face the minimum as she induced a fly out to right field for the second out before senior catcher
Riley O'Connor (Maspeth, N.Y.) caught the runner stealing base to end the inning.
The sophomore worked her fourth straight inning of facing the minimum batter in the bottom of the fifth and her third 1-2-3 inning of the day to keep the 2-0 lead intact.
In the home half of the sixth, Campbell retired the first two batters before the Mavericks recorded their second hit of the afternoon to keep the inning alive. Unfazed, Campbell would induce a grounder to Cain as the Knights got a fielder's choice for the third out of the inning.
With the Mavericks down to their final three outs, a walk opened the frame as the home side looked for a walk-off rally, but Campbell and her defense would hold firm as they retired the next three batters in a row to earn the 2-0 shutout victory.
GAME TWO RECAP
In the nightcap, Cain
(2-4 AB, 2B, 3RBI, 2R), and Pescatore
(2-4 AB, 2B, RBI) combined for multi-hit games and four RBI, while Parascandola
(1-2 AB), Campbell
(1-3 AB, R, BB), Zumpol
(1-4 AB, R), and Baez
(1-2 AB, HR, RBI, 3R, 2BB) all combined to recorded eight hits, and seven runs scored.
In the circle, Voskinarian
(W, 3-7, 7.0 IP, 8H, 2ER, 2BB, 2K) would hold the Mavericks at bay allowing eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, and punching out two batters as the junior earned her third victory of the year as Queens completed the Sunday afternoon sweep to the final score of 7-2.
After three scoreless innings, the Knights would jump ahead behind Baez's second home run of the day and her team-leading sixth of the year with a solo shot over left field to give the Knights an early 1-0 advantage after the top of the fourth.
The Mavericks looked to respond right away as they opened the home frame with a double to right center but Voskinarian would stand firm as she retired the next three batters in a row to keep the 1-0 lead intact.
But the home side would break through in the home half of the fifth using a lead-off double before a single tied the game at 1-1. With the Mavericks still threatening, Voskinarian and her defense would leave two runners stranded to keep the game tied at 1-1
Queens wasted little time in responding as with one out in the top of the sixth, Baez earned a walk before a RBI double to left center from Cain scored Baez before Pescatore's RBI double down the left field line put the Knights up 3-1.
Voskinarain worked out of a two-out walk and single in the bottom of the sixth to keep the 3-1 lead safe.
In the top of the seventh, the Knights put together a two-out rally scoring four runs on two hits, and two walks to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
As Campbell earned a four-pitch walk, a single from Zumpol would advance Campbell to second before both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Queens would load the bases behind Baez earning her second walk of the game before Cain put the Knights up 5-1 with a two RBI single to right field. A wild pitch would score Baez to give the Knights a 6-1 lead before Cain took advantage of a fielding error to score the Knights' seventh run of the day.
With Queens leading 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Voskinarian opened the frame retiring the first batter before a double to right field put a runner on base.
The junior would get the second out of the frame with a grounder to Cain before a single scored the Mavericks' second run of the day. But the Knights would ensure there would be no comeback rally as Voskinarian induced a grounder to Zumpol for the final out of the game as Queens completed the Sunday sweep to the final score of 7-2 and earn the series victory over the Mavericks to the score of 3-1.
Head coach
