LINCOLN, PA. – Continuing the East Coast Conference series, the Queens College baseball team (
22-9 overall, 6-4 ECC) matched up against the Lions of Lincoln University
(10-23-1 overall, 3-7 ECC) on day two of the four-game series.
With the Knights leading 9-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Mother Nature decided it wanted to play as well but with both teams having completed five complete innings of play and game offically in regulation to be called after five, the Knights earned the victory to the final score of 7-0.
In the shortened official game, the Knights offense tallied eight hits led by senior
Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) (3-3 AB, 2B, 2RBI, R) second straight game of three hits, and junior
Teovaldo Estevez (Bronx, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, RBI, R) recorded his first multi-hit game of the season.
While the trio of sophomore
Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, 2B, RBI, R, BB), freshman
Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, RBI, R) and freshman
Andrew Ramirez (Walnut, CA) (1-2 AB, 2R, BB) combined for three hits, and four runs scored.
It would be a one-man pitching show as junior
Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) (W 5-2 IP, H, BB, 6K) held the Lions' bat to one hit, allowing one walk while striking out six batters to earn his fifth win of the season.
Both pitchers worked a clean first inning to start the game before Fontana tallied his team-leading 11
th double of the season to open the second inning of play. As the Lions got the first out, senior
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) would earn a five-pitch walk as Queens had two runners on with one out.
But the Lions' defense kept the next two batters quiet to get out of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
Having retired five straight batters, the Lions tallied a two-out single to center field before a passed ball advanced the runner into scoring position. But Sanabria would keep the batter stranded on second base as the Woodside native earned his third strikeout of the day.
With the game scoreless heading into the top of the third, the Knights offense went to work as Estevez began the third with a single through the left side.
A fielding error on a fielders' choice would allow Estevez to advance to third before a RBI double from Cisco scored the junior catcher as the Knights took a 1-0 lead.
With no outs, and runners in scoring position, Jorsixt would double the Knights advantage to 2-0 as he grounded out to shortstop before Fontana recorded his second straight hit with a RBI single through the left field to score Cisco as Queens took a 3-0 lead after the completion of the top of the third.
Sanabria would retire three straight batters on six pitches to end the third before Queens extended their lead to 4-0 on a sac fly from senior
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) in the top of the fourth inning.
Leading 4-0 after four innings of play, the Knights would take a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Sanabria would work out of a one-out walk to retire the next two straight batters to make the game official before mother nature struck in the top of the sixth inning.
A lightning delay followed by rain paused the game for two hours before the umpires called the game as five complete innings were officially in the book.
