FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing East Coast Conference play, the Queens College softball team
(4-8 ECC) traveled to Dobbs Ferry as they matched up against the Mavericks of Mercy College
(5-7 ECC) to complete the four-game series Friday afternoon.
It would be a tough loss in game one as the offense was limited to five hits led by sophomore
Caroline Pescatore (North Babylon, N.Y.) (2-3 AB) two-hit performance, while senior
Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (1-3 AB), junior
Alyssa Wilkinson (Bayside, N.Y.) (1-3), and sophomore
Emma Zumpol (Patchogue, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) combined for three hits.
Having been limited to five hits, the Knights would leave seven base runners stranded as they dropped game one to the final score of 7-0.
While in game two, the offense tallied seven hits led by Pescatore's
(2-3 AB, RBI, R, BB) second straight multi-hit performance, while sophomore
Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B, RBI) recorded a two-hit performance as three other Knights combined for three hits.
But three fielding errors and 11 base runners left stranded would prove to be the difference maker as the game two rally fell short to the final score of 5-4.
In game one, the Knights would be held to one hit through the first five innings of play before Queens tried to rally back in the top of the sixth.
As a fielding error gave Queens an opportunity to fight back, a single by Grimshaw put a runner in scoring position. But the Mavericks would keep the offense at bay as they got the last batter to strike out.
Mercy would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth as they put the game out of reach to defeat the Knights to the final score of 7-0.
While in game two, Queens opened the scoring as
Dyana Budakowski (Washingtonville, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, RBI, R) reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman before senior
Cyarra Alvarado (Coral Springs, FL) got hit by a pitch.
But the Mavericks would get Grimshaw to line out to right field before Wilkinson drew a walk to load the bases with one out.
Junior
Riley O'Connor (Maspeth, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, RBI) put the Knights up 1-0 as she delivered with a RBI sac fly out to center field before Baez extended the advantage to 2-0 with a RBI single to center field.
In the circle, graduate student
Allyson Dilday (Castle Rock, CO) kept the home side at bay as she worked out of a single and walk in the bottom of the first to leave two base runners stranded before working a clean second inning as she retired three straight batters.
Leading 2-0 to begin the bottom of the third, a fielding error would allow the Mavericks to cut the deficit down to 2-1 after the competition of three innings.
But the Knights would use small ball to their advantage as they reclaimed a 3-1 lead after the top of the fourth inning.
But once again another fielding error would haunt the Knights as Mercy took advantage to cut the deficit down to 3-2 before the Mavericks rallied to take a 5-3 lead after the completion of five innings.
Trailing 5-3 to begin the top of the seventh inning, the Mavericks would get the first two outs as they inched closer to completing the sweep. But a single from O'Connor before a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases as Queens threatened to earn a doubleheader split.
As the second walk of the inning saw the score cut down to 5-4, the Mavericks would get the final out to fly out to center field as they took the series 3-1 over the Knights.
UP NEXT: Head coach
Amy Delmore and the Knights continue their road trip as they travel to Buffalo on Sunday (Apr. 16) afternoon as they match up against the Saints of D'Youville University. First pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
