FLUSHING, N.Y. – With bad weather shifting the final game of the East Coast Conference series opener to Monday, the Queens College baseball team
(14-5 overall, 3-1 ECC) wasted no time in taking an early lead and never looked back to defeat the visiting College of Staten Island Dolphins
(7-12 overall, 1-3 ECC) to the final score of 11-3 at Hennekens Stadium.
With the series win, Queens earned their straight series victory over the Dolphins and have won their last three ECC series opener dating back to the 2021 season.
In the final game of the series, the Knights registered double-digit hits for the third time in the four game series as they recorded 14 hits led by junior
Francis Segarra (Bronxville, N.Y.) (4-5 AB, RBI, 3R, SB) second four-hit performance, and junior
Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (3-4 AB, 2B, HR, 3RBI, R) first three-hit performance and second multi-hit game of the season. The duo combined for six RBI while five other Knights recorded a RBI.
While the senior duo of
Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B, RBI, R) and
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 3RBI, R) knocked in multi-hit performances on the day.
Game four starter
Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) (W 4-1, 6.0 IP, 3H, ER, 4BB, 2K) and junior
Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) (S6, 3.0 IP, 3H, BB, 2K) limited the Dolphins offense to six hits, with one earned run and struck out four batters.
As Sanabria used 12 pitches to start the game with a clean 1-2-3 inning, the Knights offense would go to work right away. Queens began the home half of the first with a walk before the Dolphins got the first out. But Segarra would give Queens an early 1-0 with a RBI single to left field.
Fontana's fourth double of the season would advance Segarra to third before Hoskins put the Knights up 3-0 with a two RBI single up the middle. The Dolphins would walk the next batter before sophomore
Matt Filip's (Maspeth, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, 2B, RBI, R) fifth double of the season saw Queens extend their lead to 4-0.
The Dolphins would get the second out as freshman
Andrew Ramirez (Walnut, CA) (1-3 AB, 2B, RBI) put the Knights up 5-0 with a sac fly to right center field.
The lead would balloon to 7-0 as Barreiros blasted his first home run of the season over left field as the Knights had officially batted around after the first inning of play.
As Sanabria retired the next two batters to begin the top of the second, he would walk the next two batters before he got the fifth batter of the inning to line out to right field.
Queens would take an 8-0 lead as sophomore
Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (1-5 AB, HR, RBI, R) sent a rocket to right center field for his first solo shot of the season. Segarra tallied his second hit of the afternoon through the left side before the Dolphins got the first out.
Segarra would steal second before advancing to third on an overthrow from the Dolphins catcher, but Hoskins would put the Knights up 9-0 with his third RBI of the day with a single up the middle.
The Dolphins would get a one-out single in the top of the third but Sanabria would keep the runner at bay as he got the last two outs to end the inning.
Staten Island would cut into Queens lead in the top of the fourth as they tallied two hits and cut the Knights lead down to 9-1.
The Knights tally their third double-digit score of the series with a run in the bottom of the fourth as they held a 10-1 advantage after four complete innings of play.
Sanabria would go six complete innings as he looked to earn his team-leading fourth win of the season.
Reliving Sanabria, Gargano entered in the seventh inning to close out the game. A fielding error would allow the visitors to cut the Knights lead down to 10-3 as they recorded three hits.
But the Knights would add a run in the bottom of the seventh before Gargano worked two straight clean innings to earn his sixth save of the season and give Queens their first ECC series of the year.
UP NEXT: Head coach
Chris Reardon and the Knights return to non-conference play on Thursday (Mar. 30) afternoon as they welcome the Golden Falcons of Felician University to Hennekens Stadium. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
