PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In a match filled with twists and turns, the Queens College volleyball team dug deep to defeat the Setters of Pace University in non-conference action at the Goldstein Fitness Center Tuesday evening.
Three Knights combined for 39 kills while the team combined for 12 blocks to lead the way in a thrilling 3-2 (
Sets Scores: 22-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, 15-13) victory.

The Knights jumped out a 4-0 lead to begin the first set before the Setters fought back to cut the score down to 3-2. But a 6-3 run would Queens ahead 10-6 before Pace started to exchange points. With the Knights leading 15-13, Pace went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-15 lead as they took the first set momentum to take a 25-22 victory and 1-0 lead.
It was the Setters who were in control early on to begin the second set before the Knights went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-11 lead.
With the Knights leading 16-12, Pace went on a 5-0 run before a kill by freshman
Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) stopped the run to tie the second set 17-17.
After the Setters took a 19-17 lead, sophomore
Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) started to swing the momentum towards the Knights before three blocks by Franco and freshman
Deirdre McCarthy (Lynbrook, N.Y.) put the Knights one point from tying the match with a 24-20 lead.
Franco would close the second with a kill as Queens tied the match 1-1 for a 25-21 victory.
The third set saw the Knights hit -.088 with nine attacking errors as Pace took the third set 25-14 victory and a 2-1 lead.
The Setters continued their run to open the fourth set. But with the fourth set tied 10-10, senior
Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) and Conrad put the Knights ahead 12-10 before a 4-0 run by the Setters put them ahead 14-12.
Trailing by two, Deodat started a 5-1 run to give Queens a 17-15 lead before the Setters tied the match 17-17. A service error would the Knights the advantage they needed before rookie
Elizabeth Cerullo (Saint James, N.Y.) made her impact as she helped propel the Knights with a 5-0 run for a 22-17 lead.
After the Setters fought back to tie the fourth set 22-22, sophomore
Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) at the service line would help the Knights tie the match 2-2 as Queens won the fourth set 25-22.
Playing in their second straight five-setter match of the season and third of the season, three Deodat kills helped the Knights take a 4-2 lead. But four straight Knights attacking errors would hurt the visitors as Pace took a 6-4 lead.
A kill by freshman
Taylor Smith (Temecula, CA) helped the Knights start a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead.
Switching sides, the Setters continued to stay close before a kill by Franco and a service ace by Boudouris put the Knights by three, 11-8 lead.
A two-run by Pace would bring the score to 12-11 before a kill by Deodat in the middle put the Knights two points from a victory for a 13-11 lead.
But the Knights continued to dig deep as Conrad and Deodat closed out the match for a 15-13 fifth set and 3-2 final score.

- Franco tallied her fourth straight double-double for a team-high 14 kills (.237%) and a season-high 25 digs (one short of her career-high 26 digs).
- Conrad tallied 13 kills and a career-high three blocks, while Deodat notched 12 kills and three blocks.
- Boudouris tallied a career-high 41 assists and two service aces on the night.
- Freshman Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) tallied a career-high 12 digs and three straight double digits in digs.
- Freshman Ryann Frontera (Dripping Springs, TX) notched 20 digs.
- McCarthy tallied a career-high six total blocks in the victory.
- In three five-setters matches on the season, the Knights improve their record to 2-1.
