Battle for #2 Seed Still Alive as Baseball Drops ECC Contest at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – As the torrential downpour in the past two days shifted the final series longer than original scheduled, the Queens College baseball dropped the game two of the East Coast Conference series to the Mavericks of Mercy College Sunday afternoon to the score of 14-3 at Mercy Field.

With the loss, the Knights moved to 23-15 overall, 14-6 in ECC play, while the Mavericks improved to 21-22-1 overall, 14-6 in conference play.

The Knights' offense tallied nine hits on the afternoon led by multi-hit performances from the freshman duo of Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (3-5 AB, 2B, RBI, 2R), and Matt Filip (3-4 AB, 2B, RBI), while three others starters knocked in a hit apiece.

Cisco tallied his team-leading 19th multi-hit game of the game and seventh three-hit performance, while Filip tallied his 14th multi-hit game and fourth three-hit performance of the season.

Game Highlights:
  • Cisco began the top of the first with a single down the left-field line before Filip knocked his 12th double of the season driving home Cisco to give Queens a 1-0 lead.
  • The Knights would struggle in the bottom of the first as the Mavericks tallied seven hits as they quickly erased the 1-0 deficit to take a 7-1 lead.
  • Queens would attempt their comeback in the top of the third as Cisco singled to right center field for his team-leading 45th RBI of the season to bring the Knights within five, 7-2.
  • After Filip singled up the middle, sophomore Andrew Smith (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, RBI) would score Cisco from second to bring the Knights within four, 7-3. But the Knights would leave the bases loaded as Mavericks avoided further damage.
  • The 7-3 deficit would be the closest the Knights would get as they left 10 players on base.
  • Mercy would score three runs in the fourth and added four runs in the seventh to square the series 1-1 with a 14-3 victory.
UP NEXT: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights conclude the regular season on Monday (May. 9) afternoon on Senior Day in the final game of the series as they look to lock up the second seed for the ECC Baseball Tournament. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
