Grimshaw Tallies Three-Hit Performances in Softball DH at STAC

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Playing in sunny, warm conditions, the Queens College softball began Monday on the road as they traveled to Sparkill, N.Y.  with an East Coast Conference doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans at Spartan Field.

But the Knights would drop game one to the score of 7-0 before ultimately falling short in game two to the score of 6-3.

The offense was unable to click in game one as they were limited to three hits.

In the nightcap, the offense tallied eight hits as senior Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (3-3 AB, HR, RBI, 2R) led the way with her first home run of the season, while freshman Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, R) tallied her fourth multi-hit performance of the season.

After a scoreless first inning, Grimshaw put the Knights up 1-0 with a solo shot to left-center field. Baez would knock in a single up the middle before the Spartans got the next two out of the inning. Baez would steal second base before Marisa Sagona (North Babylon, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, RBI) drove home Baez with a single to right-center field to put the Knights up 2-0.

But the Spartans would tally four runs on three hits and a throwing error to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the second inning.

Queens would cut into the deficit in the fourth inning as Grimshaw began the inning with a single through the ride side. But once again the Spartans would get two outs but would advance Grimshaw to second. The New Hyde Park native would advance to third on a wild pitch before junior Joy Papagianopoulos (Wading River, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, 2B, RBI) drove home Grimshaw with a double down the left-field line to bring the visitors within 4-3.

The comeback rally would fall rally as the Spartans tacked in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to sweep the Monday afternoon doubleheader.

UP NEXT: Head coach Amy Delmore and the Knights continue conference play as they travel to Staten Island, N.Y. Wednesday (Apr. 13) afternoon with a match-up against the College of Staten Island Dolphins. The first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
