STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Continuing East Coast Conference play on the road, the Queens College softball team earned a Wednesday afternoon split at CSI Complex against host College of Staten Island Dolphins.
In game one the Knights took an early 4-0 lead and never let go to win 7-2 before suffering another close 1-0 loss in game two as the offense left eight runners on base.
Queens outhit Staten Island 14-5 in game one with senior
Emma Wimmer (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) (3-4 AB, RBI, R) leading the way on both ends of the field as she pitched a complete game in the circle
(W, 7.0 IP, 5H, 2ER, 6K) to pick up her first win of the season.
While senior
Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2RBI) notched her second straight multi-hit performance in a row to lead the way with two RBIs.
With one out, Wimmer tallied her first single of the afternoon to center field before senior
Danielle D'Angelo (Middle Island, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, 2R) singled to right-center before a throwing error advanced both runners into scoring position.
Grimshaw gave the Knights an early 2-0 lead with a two-RBI single to left field to score both runners. After freshman
Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, 2R, BB) earned a walk, the Dolphins would finally get their second out as Grimshaw was caught stealing third base. But Baez would steal second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. A fielding error would allow Baez to score from third to put the Knights up 3-0 before the Dolphins finally got out of the inning.
As Wimmer worked a clean first inning, she would help her own cause in the top half of the second with a RBI single as the Knights went up 4-0.
The Dolphins would cut into the deficit in the third as they tallied three hits but the senior would leave two runners on base to prevent further damage as the Knights saw their lead trimmed down to 4-1.
After the offense left two runners on base in the top of the fourth, Staten Island cut the score down to 4-2 but once again Wimmer would the inning with a strikeout to keep the Knights ahead.
Leading 4-2, Queens would put away the game in the top of the seventh inning with five hits to extend their advantage to 7-2.
Wimmer looking for the complete game worked her fourth clean inning of the afternoon as the Knights took the opening game of the series 7-2.
Game two would see a pitcher duel as both offenses were limited to five hits with Queens tallying three hits led by game two starting pitcher
Arianna Fracchioni (Westbury, N.Y.) (1-4 AB), D'Angelo
(1-3 AB), and senior
Marisa Sagona (North Babylon, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, BB)
But the offense would leave eight runners on base as the offense fizzled in game two.
The Knights had the bases loaded to open the game as the offense earned two walks and a single but the Dolphins would find a way to keep the game scoreless as they evaded another early deficit.
In the circle Fracchioni worked a gem as she limited the Dolphins to two hits, including retiring 10 batters in a row before two fielding errors in the crucial sixth inning would leave the Knights heartbroken to the game two final score of 1-0.
