FLUSHING, N.Y. – Despite having found the bats that they were searching for on Saturday, the Queens College baseball team
(4-3 overall) were unable to solve Bloomfield College Bears
(3-4 overall) starting pitcher as the Knights fell 6-2 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
Looking to earn the series victory Sunday over the Bears, the Knights had a tough task ahead of them. But as the rain and dark clouds started to give away to sunny and warm conditions, Queens needed to mount a comeback as they trailed 5-0 after three and half innings of play.
Trailing 5-0 to begin the bottom of the fourth inning of play, sophomore
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2R) tallied his first hit of the series with a single to right field. But the Bears would get the next two outs before
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) got hit a pitch to extend the inning.
With runners on second and first, freshman
Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2B, RBI) continue his hot streak with his second hit of the afternoon as he drove in Hoskins with a double to the right field to get the Knights on the scoreboard.
With a chance to cut further into their 5-1 deficit, sophomore
Colin Diez (Levittown, N.Y.) (2-4 AB) looked to have brought the Knights within two but a tremendous diving play by the Bears left fielder would rob Diez and the Knights of a hit and more runs to end the fourth.
After a quiet fifth inning from both teams, the Bears extended their lead to 6-1 with a solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth. But the Knights would not go away quietly and would respond in the bottom frame. After Reed earned his first multi-hit game of the season with a shot right back to the pitcher, the Knights would have runners on the corners after the Bears shortstop elected for a fielder choice at second but a throwing error would allow Reed to advance to third.
With no outs and runners on third and first, sophomore
Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, 2B, RBI) tallied his third double of the season with a shot to left-center to drive home Reed cutting the deficit down to 6-2.
But the Bears would escape the inning without any further damage and shut out the Knights for the remainder of the game to earn a 6-2 series victory.
UP NEXT: Non-conference action continues Tuesday (Mar. 8) as Queens looks to bounce back against Post University Eagles for a single nine-inning game. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
