Softball Battles Hard against Adelphi Friday Afternoon

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Playing their second non-conference doubleheader of the season, the Queens College softball team fought hard against host Adelphi University Panthers in Friday sunny conditions.

But the Knights would drop both games as the Panthers scored the winning runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take game one 5-2 before the Knights were shut out in game two to fall to the score of 11-0 in five innings.

It was a shaky start for game one starter senior righty Emma Wimmer (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) (L, 0-2, 11H, 4ER, 2K) as the Knights fell behind 1-0 after the first inning of play. Senior Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, RBI) would single up the middle to start the top half of the second inning, but a fielder's choice would enable the Panthers to get the first out of the inning before the Panthers worked out of the inning leaving a Knights' runner on second base.

Adelphi would double their advantage in the bottom half as they took advantage of two fielding errors to go up 2-0 before Wimmer struck out the last Panthers batter to prevent any further damage.

After a scoreless third inning for both teams, the Knights would rally back in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2. Senior Danielle D'Angelo (Middle Island, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, 2B, R) doubled to right-center before advancing to third base on a passed ball.

Grimshaw would ground out to second base allowing D'Angelo to score as the Knights cut the score down to 2-1.

Senior Marisa Sagona (North Babylon, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, R, BB) earned a walk before freshman Emma Zumpol (Patchogue, N.Y.) (2-3 AB) singled up the middle advancing Sagona to second.

The Panthers got the second out with a fly-out to right field but Sagona and Zumpol would advance bases giving the Knights' runners in scoring position. The Panthers looked to have evaded further damage but a fielding error by the first basemen would allow the Knights to tie the game 2-2 as Sagona scored from third. But Zumpol would get thrown out at home as she looked to take advantage of the fielding error.

Wimmer found her spot as she continued to keep the Knights in pace with the Panthers. In the top half of the sixth inning with no outs, Sagona and Zumpol tallied back-to-back hits with Zumpol earning her first multi-hit game of the season but Adelphi would get out of the inning with a strikeout.

The Panthers would score three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning before the Knights were struck out in order to end the game as Queens was defeated 5-2 in a close game.

In game two, fielding errors would pave the way as the Knights were unable to answer back. Queens found themselves trialing 8-0 after two innings of play.

After being held hitless for the first three innings of play, Queens attempted to rally back with two outs in the top half of the fourth. D'Angelo (1-2 AB) would single to right field before Grimshaw (1-2 AB) singled through the left side advancing D'Angelo to second. But the Knights were unable to get a run on board as the Panthers struck out the last batter to end the inning.

The Knights would eventually fall 11-0 in five-innings to drop their second doubleheader of the season.

UP NEXT: On Sunday (Mar. 20) afternoon, Head coach Amy Delmore and the Knights host their first home doubleheader of the season as they welcome the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University to Flushing. The first pitch is set for noon.
