FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College softball team hosted their first doubleheader of the season in cloudy, chilly conditions as the Knights welcomed the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University Sunday afternoon to Queens College Softball Field.
But the Knights were shutout in game one falling 6-0 before coming short in game two to the score of 8-3 against the Warriors.
Queens found themselves trialing 4-0 after five complete innings as the bats were limited to two hits. The Warriors would extend their advantage to 6-0 after six and a half innings of play as the home side still searched to put runners on base.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Knights earned base runner in scoring position as the Warriors walked two batters. But a single up by the middle by senior
Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (2-3 AB) looked to have scored the first run of the game for the Knights but a timely throw to home plate from center field would get the runner out at home to end the inning.
Looking to rally back in the final inning of play, the Knights put a runner on base following an error by the first basemen before the Warriors got the first out. A single by freshman
Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (1-3 AB) would put a runner on second and first with only one out.
But the Warriors would end the game with back-to-back strikeouts to take game one to the final score of 6-0.
Game two started in the same narrative as the home side found themselves trailing 2-0 after the top half of the first inning.
However the Knights would respond quickly as they cut the deficit down to one, 3-2 in the home half of the first. Junior
Cyarra Alvarado (Coral Spring, Fla) (2-4 AB, 2B, R) started the inning with a double to left-center field before freshman
Caroline Pescatore (North Babylon, N.Y.) reached first base on a passed ball advancing Alvarado to third.
After the Warriors got the first out, a two-RBI single by Grimshaw
(2-3 AB, 2B, 2RBI) to left-center would put the Knights on the scoreboard for the first time on the afternoon as they cut the score down to 3-2. But two straight grounders would end the inning leaving Grimshaw stranded on third.
The Knights would leave a runner stranded on second base in the bottom half of the second as they were unable to make further inroads. But the Warriors' offense would tally five runs on five hits in the top half of the third as they looked to open the game up further taking an 8-2 lead.
The Knights would respond in the bottom half as senior
Danielle D'Angelo (Middle Island, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, R) singled up the middle with one out before Grimshaw tallied her second multi-hit game of the season with a double through the right side advancing D'Angelo to third.
A wild pitch would allow D'Angelo to capitalize and score from third as Queens cut the deficit down to 8-3, but were unable to find more offense as they dropped their first doubleheader at home to the final score of 8-3.
UP NEXT: On Tuesday (Mar. 22) afternoon, Head coach
Amy Delmore and the Knights open East Coast Conference play as they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. with a matchup against Molloy College Lions. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
