WEST POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2020) - Sophomore
Pavan Bhat of the Queens College men's track and field team took first place in the men's long, high and triple jump disciplines in leading a spirited effort on Thursday (Jan. 9) at the West Point Open on the campus of the United States Military Academy.
Bhat, who was an All-East Region High Jump honoree last year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), posted a 1.85-meter leap to win the high jump in a five-man competition. The sophomore then posted winning metrics with a 6.83-meter long jump and a 13.98-meter triple jump to claim first place in those events as well.
Ooreofe Oluwadara performed well in the latter two disciplines as well for the Knights, finishing in fourth (6.63m) in the high jump and third (12.62m) in the triple jump.
In other results from the men's field events,
Daniel Diaz led a cavalcade of Knights in the shot put as Queens posted a 3-4-5 finish in that discipline. Diaz's 12.50-meter throw took home third place with
Andrew Saulpaugh placing fourth (12.31m) and
Robert Skidmore earning a fifth-place finish with a toss of 11.55 meters. Saulpaugh also placed third in the weight throw competition, registering a throw of 15.27 meters.
On the track,
Ismail Abdullah was one of the lead sprinters for Queens on the day. The sophomore transfer from LIU Post had the best QC performance in the 200-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 23.92 seconds; Abdullah also won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.80 seconds. His 200-meter dash time bested teammates
Hakeem Alexander-Blake (sixth-place, 24.07s) and
Jeremy Herbert (seventh-place, 24.71s) as well. Meanwhile, Queens had all five competitors in the men's 500-meter run which was won in a time of 1:08.00 by
Jahmel Maynor-Mendez.
Myles Jackson was the runner-up in the race with a time of 1:08.51 and Alexander-Blake (1:10.33) rounded out the podium places.
Meanwhile,
Crystal Jia had two victories on the day in the women's track disciplines as the junior took first place in the 1000-meter run (3:43.58) and mile (5:55.33). In both races,
Alexis Hall took second place by posting a 3:49.54 in the 1000-meters and a 6:01.27 mile time. Jia was also the leadoff leg on the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:34.78) that defeated Lehman in a straight match-up with teammates
Angelinna Bradfield,
Atziry Carabajo and
Angie Calle keeping the Knights in front to the finish line.
In the field events for the women's team,
Kennedy Williams registered a third-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 12.73 meters. Meanwhile,
Nyakuome Thichiot acquitted herself well in the triple jump with a runner-up leap of 10.30 meters.
The Knights will split up for the remainder of the week with the women's team heading to the STAC Spartan Invitational on Friday (Jan. 10) and the men's team competing in the UAlbany Great Dane Classic on Saturday (Jan. 11). Both meets will be housed at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on Staten Island.
