Seven-Run First Inning Puts Baseball in Early Hole; Knights Fall to Mercy, 12-3

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2018) - The Queens College baseball team yielded seven runs in the first inning and could not rally back, falling on Tuesday (Apr. 17) to Mercy College by a final score of 12-3 in the teams' ECC series finale at Mercy Field.

The Knights (10-21, 2-14 ECC) opened the first inning well as Kevin Kolesar cracked a lead-off double to start the game. However, Mercy (17-19, 6-6 ECC) starter Manuel Sanchez induced a double play off the bat of Thomas Parish and retired Louis Antos to end the top half of the frame. The Mavericks then jumped all over QC starting pitcher Dimitri Papazoglou---who faced seven batters but did not record an out. Joseph Sadallah smacked a lead-off double followed by a single from John Mooradian. After Anthony Murphy walked to load the bases, Miguel Ortiz Sanchez walloped a ground-rule double to bring home two runs and put Mercy up early. Adonis Garcia followed with a two-run single and two walks were later issued to load the bases and end Papazoglou's day. Brandon Hoskins entered the contest and struck out the next two batters in succession, but Sadallah was hit by a pitch and Mooradian brought home two runs on a single as the Mavs led by seven runs after just six outs of play.

The Mavericks led 9-0 after three innings before Queens mustered some offense in the top of the fourth inning. Kolesar led off the frame with a double and he eventually scored on an RBI two-bagger off the bat of Sam Siegel. Paulino Harrington singled home Parish and Siegel to cut the hosts' lead to six runs at 9-3, but the Knights were limited to just two hits in the final five innings against Mercy's pitching staff.

Kolesar and Antos each had two of the Knights' six base hits in the effort. Hoskins threw 5.2 innings of relief for Queens, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out four batters. The quartet of Dylan Sabia, Thomas Zaki, Adam Abreu and David Hernandez combined to surrender a run on three hits over the final two and one-thirds innings of relief for the Knights.

Queens will take on Southern Connecticut State in non-conference action on Wednesday (Apr. 18) at 3:30 p.m.
