Box Score SHIRLEY, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team topped Dowling 7-4 in the first contest of its four game weekend series with the Golden Lions Friday afternoon.
Junior Kevin Kolesar (New City, N.Y.) contributed three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs in the win, while junior Joseph Pidoto (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) had two hits and drove in three runs. Sophomore Karl Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) had two hits, while junior Jorge Ruiz (Shirley, N.Y.) had two runs batted in.
On the hill, senior Brandon Burrell (Inwood, N.Y.) picked up his second win of the season, going 7.1 innings with three strikeouts. Ruiz picked up his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Knights jumped on the board quickly, with four runs in the top of the first inning. Kolesar plated freshman Andrew Navarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with a triple to center field. Pidoto followed later in the inning with a double to right center, scoring Ruiz, Kolesar and sophomore Thomas Parish (Cortland Manor, N.Y.).
A run scoring ground out to short by Chris Appell brought in Michael Rizzitello with Dowling's first run, trimming the deficit to three. In the sixth inning, Rizzitello drove in R.J. Going with a ground out to short of his own.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kolesar connected on another triple, this time scoring Klesin with QC's fifth run. Later in the frame, Parish and Kolesar crossed the plate on Ruiz's single through the left side.
Dowling capped the scoring on the day, as Rizzitello drove in Going with a single to left. He later scored on a single by Appell.
Dowling starter Dominic Danetti (0-4) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits in four innings. The Knights and Golden Lions continue their series Saturday afternoon with a double header at Hennekens Stadium (12:00 pm).
