Volleyball Outlasted By Southern Connecticut State At Home

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Queens College volleyball completed its early season three game home stand with a five set loss to Southern Connecticut State Tuesday evening at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.  The teams traded set victories, with the Knights claiming sets two and four, while the Owls came away with sets one, three and five to claim the victory.

A trio of Queens players registered double-digit kills, led by freshman OH Malaika Hollis' 18.  Hollis also added 12 digs and a team-high 20.5 points in the contest.  Senior LB Xhesi Domi tallied a game high 27 digs, while sophomore OH Ragina Anthony had 10 digs and seven kills.  Sophomore S Kristen Moore has 11 digs and 31 assists in the contest.

Leanna Jadus recorded a team best 18 kills for the Owls, to go along with 18 digs.  Morgan Cashman finished with 26 digs, while Alexandra Nimz had 40 assists.

The Knights took control early in the first set, 4-2, but a Southern Connecticut State rally put the Owls ahead 6-5. Both teams battled for the lead in a set that featured six ties as Queens grabbed a three-point lead. Southern Connecticut State kept within reach of the Knights, tying the set at 22-22. The Owls ended the set with the final three points.

Southern Connecticut kept its momentum going into the second stanza, taking a brief 6-3 lead. Queens took an 8-7 lead and pushed it up to three, 14-11. With the score 20-19 in favor of the Knights, Queens closed on a 5-0 run to evened the match at one set apiece.

The Owls took an early 5-1 lead over the Knights to open the third. QC battled back to within one, 5-4, before eventually grabbing a 13-12 advantage. Trailing by four, Queens stopped the Owls from recording set point, 24-21. But a service error allowed Southern to grab a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

In the fourth set, Southern Connecticut took an early 9-5 lead. With the Owls ahead 18-13, Queens rallied back with a 7-2 charge, tying the game at 20-20. The Knights continued their push and eventually closed out the fourth set, 25-23.

In the final set, Queens opened the frame on a 4-1 run. Southern Connecticut took the lead, 7-6, before two straight points gave the Knights an 8-7 lead. The Owls grabbed two quick points to take the lead for good, and picked up the fifth set victory 15-11.
