Flushing, N.Y. - Saturday, May 2, was a busy day in the sports scene. The Kentucky Derby ran in Churchill Downs, The NBA and NHL continued their playoffs, Manny Pacquiao met Floyd Mayweather in a title fight in Las Vegas, and in Flushing, the Queens College women's tennis team blanked Stonehill, 5-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Championship from the tennis courts in Queens.
It was a day that saw both QC tennis teams compete in the NCAAs, the softball team host and win the East Coast Conference Championship and the baseball team sweep a doubleheader on Senior Day. But is was the women's tennis team that started off the day with a dominating performance. The Knights were ranked #29 in the nation and #3 East.
The team began by sweeping all three doubles matches. They won all three flights by identical, 8-0 scores. The first flight was manned by Sumeera Kamil and Angelika Sobiecka. The number two doubles team consisted of Andrea Samson and Yevgeniya (Jenna) Plevako. The final pairing was Aylin Mehter and Cami Abdallah.
Plevako and Mehter finished the match with wins in singles play. Mehter came out on top, 6-0, 6-1 and Plevako prevailed 6-2, 6-0.
The team has another formidable task in front of them as they face #20 Concordia on Sunday at 10:30 AM form the tennis courts in Queens. The winner of that match heads to Surprise, Arizona for the final 16 in the country.
