No. 24 Queens Women’s Tennis Powers Past No. 33 Jefferson with Strong Senior Day Showing

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Closing out their homestand on Senior Day Friday afternoon, the No. 24 Queens College women's tennis team delivered a dominant performance, defeating No. 33 Thomas Jefferson University, 6-1, at the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble in non-conference action.
 
The Knights swept all three doubles courts to secure the opening point before claiming five of six singles matches. Junior Lilie Bizouerne (La Ciotat, France) clinched the victory at No. 3 singles to seal the win.
 
With the triumph, Queens improves to 12-3 overall on the season.
 
Prior to first serve, head coach Alan Nagel and the program honored graduating seniors Marie Bertran (Villelaure, France), Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico), and Lydia Zafeiri (Athens, Greece) as part of the team's annual Senior Day ceremony.

Doubles Play

The nationally ranked No. 22 tandem of senior Marie Bertran (Villelaure, France) and freshman Ela Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) set the tone at No. 1 doubles with a strong 6-2 victory over Sophia Barber and Marta Vazquez.
 
Queens secured the doubles point at No. 3, where senior Lydia Zafeiri (Athens, Greece) and sophomore Johanne Genestay (Dinan, France) battled to a 7-5 win over Anouk Oderkerk and Rose Huang.
 
The No. 2 duo of juniors Lilie Bizouerne (La Ciotat, France) and Sixtine Goubet (Lyon, France) completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-5) triumph against Alycia Veroux and Emily Frost.

Singles Play

Holding a 1-0 lead, Vasic extended the advantage with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Barber, followed by Genestay's 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 to make it 3-0.
 
Bizouerne, ranked No. 36 nationally, clinched the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Vazquez.
 
Goubet pushed the lead to 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Veroux.
 
The Rams avoided the sweep at the top spot, as Bertran dropped a hard-fought three-set match to No. 40 Oderkerk.

Senior Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico) closed out the scoring for Queens at No. 6 singles, rallying for a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-5) comeback victory over Frost.

Next Match:

Queens returns to action on Friday, April 10, traveling to Washington, D.C. for an East Coast Conference matchup against the University of the District of Columbia. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
