Box Score Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team used strong pitching and a late-inning rally to earn a come-from-behind, 5-2 win over Merrimack on Thursday in Flushing. Greg Gonzalez and Jonathan Russell combined on the mound while Dan Walsh blasted a home run.
Merrimack took a 2-0 lead in the game as they scored single runs in the third and the fifth. The run in the fifth came on a Greg Newton solo homerun.
Trainling 2-0, Queens finally got on the board in the sixth. Joe Morris was hit by the pitch. The next batte, Lebro Burnette, bunted to move Morris along, but the pitcher's throw was on the inside of the bag and Burnette and the first baseman collided, causing him to drop the ball. Runners were on the corners for the Knights. Nick Osburn hit into a double play, but Morris scored and the Warriors lead was just 2-1.
One inning later, Nate Spielvogel relieved Tim Cashman and Walsh tied the game at 2-2 with a solo blast over the wall in left field. Joseph Paparella followed Walsh with a base hit. He stole second and moved to third on a fly out. From there, Lenny Torres and Morris earned walks to load the bases. Burnette then singled up the middle to score Paparella and Torres, but Morris got thrown out off of second base. The three runs in the inning put QC up, 4-2. Paprella drove in a run in the eighth with a sacrifice bunt and Queens had a 5-2 win.
In the vitcory, Gonzalez pitched seven innings, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. He surrendered a pair of earned runs. Jonathan Russell earned his first save of the season with two scoreless innings.
The Queens College baseball team opens conference play on Friday, March 21, when they host Mercy College at 3:00 PM.
