Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - In a season that saw the
Queens College volleyball team win its first four matches, surpass
its victory total from a year ago, and sweep a tri-match at home
earlier in the year, the team suffered its first setback of the
2013 season in five sets to Chestnut Hill, 3-2, in Philadelphia, on
Friday. The scores of the sets were 26-28, 25-17, 25-21,
18-25 and 9-15.
The opening frame began with the Knights taking a 5-2 lead on
kills from Francesca Indoni and Arielle DiCocco and three errors
from the Griffins. Later in the set, QC regained its
three-point advantage, at 10-7, but Chestnut Hill got hot and
rattled off five straight points to take a 12-10 lead. QC had
an answer for this, though, as they rolled off four points of their
own to regain the lead, 14-12. In that runs, the Knights got
points from DiCocco and Ceren Kilic.
The score would be tied at 22-all late in the set when QC took
the next two points to lead, 24-22. With the Knights needing
one more point for the set, the Griffins responded by scoring three
in a row to take a 25-24 lead. A Bianca Steele kill tied the
game at 25-25. The two sides traded the net two points and
then Chestnut Hill scored the final two points to take the set,
28-26.
Queens responded in the second set by taking a 5-0 lead.
They pushed to the lead to eight points, at 15-7, when a Xhesi Domi
serve was misplayed. Eventually, the Knights were up 21-10,
when an Angela Kranz serve led to an attack error from the
Griffins. QC won the second set, 25-17, and evened the match
at 1-1.
In the third set, the Griffins took a 4-2 lead before Queens
responded. A 7-5 run for the Knights evened the
score at 9-9. QC scored four points to take a 13-9
lead. The run was keyed by another DiCocco kill.
Eventually the Knights went on to take the set, 25-21, as Kilic set
up DiCocco for the final point.
Ahead two sets to one, the Knights needed to take the fourth set
to earn the win. Queens got off to a slow start as Chestnut
Hill went ahead 12-7. From there, five consecutive QC points
netted the set at 12-12, as the run was spurred by kills from
DiCocco and Domi. The teams swapped the next two points and
then the Griffins went on to take the fourth set, 25-18. In
the deciding set, the Knights fell behind early and weren't
able to recover as Chestnut Hill earned the win.
In the match, Indoni recorded a double-double with 14 kills and
16 digs. Kilic posted a season-best 42 assists.
The Knights will remain in Pennsylvania over the weekend as they
are competing in a tri-match with Cheney and Shaw on Saturday.
