FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's volleyball team wrapped up day two of the fourth annual Aline Pascale Lubin Invitational Saturday, taking on nationally ranked No. 9 Wayne State College and Bloomsburg University at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The young Knights squad was swept in both matches, but gained valuable experience against two teams from outside the region to close out the season-opening invitational.
Rookie
Zoe Sercu paced Queens across the two matches with 13 kills, three blocks and five digs, while fellow rookie
Mikayla Haskell added 11 kills and three blocks over six sets.
Against the nationally ranked Wildcats, the Knights battled throughout the opening two sets, with the three frames featuring three ties and one lead change. Wayne State ultimately pulled away, holding Queens to a .077 hitting percentage as the Knights finished with 19 kills and 14 errors on 65 attacks.
Queens continued to battle against Bloomsburg, as the three-set contest featured nine ties and two lead changes. The Knights recorded 19 kills and 16 errors on 73 attacks while keeping the Huskies within striking distance throughout the match.
In the second set, Queens mounted a late comeback attempt after trailing by as many as nine points. The Knights used a late run to pull within two, 21-19, but Bloomsburg held on to take the set.
The Knights again battled in the third set, which featured six ties and two lead changes. Sercu and Haskell combined for five of Queens' six kills in the frame, but the Huskies ultimately closed out the match.
Despite the two setbacks, the young Knights gained valuable experience against a pair of experienced opponents as they continue to build chemistry early in the season.
