Box Score 2 Oakdale, N.Y. - The weekend series with Dowling
was going to be an important one for East Coast Conference
standings and after losing a pair on Saturday, the Knights head
into Sunday hoping to salvage one game from the series.
Queens fell to the Golden Knights 7-1 and 3-2.
It looked like an auspicious start for the Knights as a Nick
LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y.) single and an Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh,
N.Y.)double gave QC a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dowling
responded with a pair of runs in the second to lead 2-1. The
Golden Lions never looked back from there, going on to win 7-1 in
game one.
LoBello led the Knights with two hits and a run scored. C.J.
Gerdowsky (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Steven Varela (Glendale, N.Y.) also
collected hits for the Knights. Frank Kaplan (Howard Beach,
N.Y.) went the distance on the mound, and struck out two batters
without walking anyone
Game two saw Queens grab the lead again, on to relinquish it
later on in the game. In the top of the second, Frank Duffy
(Astoria, N.Y.) reached on a single. He moved to second on a
Gerdowsky sacrifice bunt and scored on a Lenny Torres (Ridgewood,
N.Y.) RBI base hit. This was the second game in which Torres
played where he drove in a run.
An inning later, the Knights extended their lead to 2-0 when
John Eyerman (Merrick, N.Y.) tripled to center. The next
batter, LoBello scored him with a double to left. From there,
the Golden Lions rallied to score three times and win, 3-2.
Freshman , John Dondero (East Islip, N.Y.) went the distance for
the Knights. He allowed three runs and struck out three.
The final game of the weekend is slated for Sunday, April 21 at
Queens College in Flushing. The first pitch is scheduled for
noon.
