The Queens College volleyball team fell to Roberts Wesleyan in
three sets on Saturday in Rochester, New York. The scores of
the sets were 25-13, 25-13 and 25-18.
The opening set saw the Knights and Redhawks start out even at
6-6. In that early stretch, Arielle DiCocco (Blue Point,
N.Y./Bayport-Blueport) recorded a kill and an ace for the
Knights. Roberts Wesleyan then used a 4-1 run to take a 10-7
lead in the opening frame.
Queens fought back, however, with a 6-0 run and took a 13-10
advantage behind kills from Bianca Steele (Massapequa, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) and Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, B.C./St. Patrick's) and
a service ace from Ceren Kilic (Istanbul, Turkey/Yuzyil
Isil). Roberts Wesleyan came back and scored the next 15
straight points to take the opening set, 25-13.
Set two was eerily similar to the opening frame as the two sides
found themselves tied at five-five. From there, the Redhawks
took a slim lead at 12-11, and then rattled off 13 of the next 15
contested points to capture the second set, 25-13.
The final frame saw the Knights take the early lead, 8-6,
courtesy of an Else Buchmiller (Sacrament, Calif./Christian
Brothers) kill. Roberts Wesleyan scored the next five points
to lead 11-8, but QC pulled within one, at 11-10, as Buchmiller
picked up another kill. Neither side could gain much momentum
from there as the score was even again at 16-all. From there,
the Redhawks used a 9-2 run to close out the set at 25-18.
In the match, Byrne recorded a team-best 11 digs, which was
complemented by Steele's match-high four block assists.
The Knights return to action on Sunday, November 11, when they
face Dowling College in a match that was rescheduled due to
Hurricane Sandy. Originally slated for Fitzgerald Gym, the
contest is now being played at Dowling at noon.
