FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior setter Stephanie Schroeder amassed seven kills, as many aces, 10 digs and 12 assists Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium, helping the Queens College volleyball team to move past visiting Concordia College, 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-14).
Senior Jovana Pavlovic (Belgrade, Serbia) hit .333 with nine kills and three aces for the Knights (2-3), while Ceren Kilic (Istanbul, Turkey) and freshman Heather Gessner (Mineola, N.Y.) added six kills apiece. Queens used a strong service game to aid the victory charge, putting down 17 aces on the night.
Schroeder (Lynbrook, N.Y.) registered a 4-0-5 hitting line in the first set, and added three service aces in a set-changing 10-4 run by QC to help the squad to a 1-0 advantage.
The Knights jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the second set, and held a 22-14 edge after an ace by Pavlovic. However, the Clipppers (0-9) stormed back with a 10-1 run to take a 24-23 lead following a QC attack error. In total, the set featured 12 ties and six lead changes, including three lead changes in extra time. With the score knotted at 28-all, Pavlovic put down two straight kills off sets from Kilic (13 assists) to give Queens the set and the momentum.
QC raced out to a 17-9 edge in the third and deciding set, and used three straight serving points from Schroeder to put the match away late.
Head coach Leanna Taylor's Knights open up East Coast Conference action Thursday night, as they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y., to face off with Molloy at 7 p.m.
