RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Queens College volleyball team traveled to Felician College Saturday afternoon, and came away with a split at its tri-match. Senior middle blocker Jovana Pavlovic tied for a NCAA Division II single-match, season-high with 32 kills in the Knights' five-set loss to Holy Family, before QC turned around and knocked off host Golden Falcons in three sets.
According to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's 30-kill club list, Pavlovic (Belgrade, Serbia) tied a trio of other individuals in Division II who put down 32 kills in five-set matches thus far in 2011: Abilene Christian's Jennie Hutt (Sept. 13, vs. Incarnate Word), Wheeling Jesuit's Allissa Ware (Sept. 20, vs. Edinboro) and Southeastern Oklahoma State's Lunden Azuara (Oct. 4, vs. Southeastern Okla. St.).
Also in the Knights' match against Holy Family (21-11), the scores by set went 25-27, 36-34, 21-25, 25-17 and 15-13. Pavlovic (13 digs) tied with freshman middle blocker, Christina Hickey (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) for the match-high with six assisted blocks, while junior outside hitter Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, B.C.) added 11 kills, 23 digs and five assisted blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Rita Romeo (Glen Oaks, N.Y.) led all players with 28 digs, while senior setter Stephanie Schroeder (Lynbrook, N.Y.) dished out 41 assists.
Queens (7-17) rebounded from the 2-hour, 30-minute match with a quick three-set triumph over Felician (25-12, 25-9, 25-7). Pavlovic (.562, match-highs of six aces and seven digs) and Byrne (.615) each put down 10 kills in the match, while Schroeder (five kills, 12 assists, three aces) and Hickey (3-0-7 hitting line) registered two assisted blocks apiece. The Knights hit .468 as a team – by far the team's highest total of the 2011 campaign.
Head coach Leanna Taylor's Queens side is back in East Coast Conference action at home on Tuesday (Nov. 1), when the Knights play host to Mercy College in Fitzgerald Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
