FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing regional competition, the nationally ranked No. 19 Queens College men's tennis team welcomed the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen to the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble for non-conference action.
The Knights swept doubles play and secured four singles victories, with junior
Said Akbarov (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) clinching the match at No. 3 singles to lead Queens to a 5-2 victory.
With the win, Queens improves to 8-0 on the season.
DOUBLES PLAY
Queens opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles courts.
At No. 2 doubles, the new pairing of senior
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) and Akbarov earned a 6-3 victory over Carlos Molero and Aurel Creveuil to give the Knights the early edge.
The No. 1 duo of senior
Alexis Martin-Gibiard (Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France) and sophomore
Adam Laur (Boulogne Billancourt, France) secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Vincente Preto and Albert Modol.
Completing the sweep, the nationally ranked No. 50 tandem of sophomore
Pablo Serrano (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and junior
Caleb Brightman (Pawling, N.Y.) defeated Marcos Castaneda and Tristan Chandler 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
SINGLES PLAY
Queens carried the momentum into singles, extending the lead to 3-0 with straight-set victories on the lower courts.
Sophomore
Samuel Linck (Haarlem, Netherlands) earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sebastian Eckert at No. 5 singles, followed by sophomore
Andres Urquiola (Tarija, Bolivia) defeating Chandler 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.
Akbarov secured the match for the Knights at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Modol.
Martin-Gibiard added the fifth point of the afternoon, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Castaneda at No. 4 singles.
Southern New Hampshire picked up wins at the top two singles flights to avoid the sweep.
