Champions of the East: Men’s Tennis’ Andersson, Calvo, and Laur Claim ITA East Regional Championships

FLUSHING, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, the Queens College men's tennis team captured both the ITA East Regional Singles and Doubles Championships, as senior Tim Andersson claimed the singles title and the doubles tandem of senior Diego Calvo and junior Adam Laur captured the doubles crown Monday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.

Competing at the ITA East Regional Singles and Doubles Championships, Andersson became the second Knight in program history to win the singles championship and the first since Roni Rikkonen captured the title in 2023.

In doubles play, Calvo and Laur secured the East Regional championship, becoming the first Queens duo to claim the title since Sharvill Nawghre and Roman Laga in 2016.

Doubles Championship

Entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed, Calvo and Laur opened their championship run with an 8-5 victory over Noel Schoene and Marc Sonderegger in the Round of 16.

The Knights tandem advanced to the quarterfinals, where they earned an 8-3 victory over Fabian Garvik and Edoardo Sambu to secure a semifinal berth against No. 4 seeds Louca Bertone and Christian Capuccini.

Calvo and Laur continued their dominant run with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set victory over Bertone and Capuccini to advance to the championship match. For the second consecutive season, Laur reached the doubles final as the duo looked to capture Queens' first East Regional doubles title since 2016.

In the final, the Knights faced No. 3 seeds Nagamitsu Kuroda and Felix Littlejohn. Calvo and Laur dropped the opening set, 6-4, but responded with a 7-5 second-set victory to force a 10-point match tiebreaker.

With the championship on the line, the Queens duo prevailed, 10-6, in the deciding tiebreaker to secure the East Regional doubles crown.

Singles Championship

Andersson, the tournament's No. 4 seed, opened his singles campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set victory over Sam Borrego in the Round of 32.

Over his next four matches, the senior faced four consecutive seeded opponents, showcasing his ability to compete against the tournament's top contenders. In the Round of 16, Andersson battled No. 12 seed Carlos Llopis, earning a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (13-11) victory to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Swedish native continued his run against No. 6 seed Vicente Preto, recording a convincing 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory to secure a semifinal berth. There, Andersson faced No. 10 seed Aurel Creveuil and delivered another clutch performance, prevailing 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to advance to the championship match.

With the victory, Andersson became the fourth Knight in the last five seasons to reach the ITA East Regional singles final.

In the championship match, Andersson faced top-seeded Theo Renoux, marking his fourth consecutive match against a seeded opponent. After trading games throughout the opening set, the two players headed to a tiebreaker, where Andersson overcame an early 2-0 deficit before pulling away to claim the tiebreaker, 7-2, and take the opening set.

The second set proved equally competitive, as both players continued to trade games. Trailing 6-5, Andersson rallied to force another tiebreaker and keep his championship hopes alive.

After the players split the opening two points, Renoux built a 5-2 advantage, moving within reach of forcing a 10-point match tiebreaker. However, Andersson responded by winning five consecutive points to complete the comeback and clinch the singles championship.

With Andersson capturing the singles title and Calvo and Laur claiming the doubles crown, the Knights will now prepare for the ITA Division II Singles and Doubles National Championships, scheduled for November 4-8, 2026, at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center in Alabama. More information will be announced soon.
