HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Opening their fall campaign, the Queens College men's tennis team traveled to Hempstead for a cross-divisional matchup against Division I Hofstra University Thursday afternoon.
The Knights earned the doubles point before taking five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over the Pride.
With the victory, Queens has won its season opener for the third consecutive season.
Doubles Play
Queens opened doubles play at No. 3, where seniors
Said Akbarov and
David Cerne defeated Caleb Tobler and Raqueem Virani, 6-1.
The Knights clinched the doubles point at No. 2 as seniors
Tim Andersson and
Diego Calvo earned a 6-1 victory over Amir Albeg and Frank Klimovitz.
Hofstra earned the win at No. 1 doubles, where junior
Samuel Linck and rookie
Petr Hruska fell to Jacob Maravillas and Matias Lofink, 7-5.
Singles Play
Leading 1-0, junior
London Mosquera opened singles play with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Klimovitz at No. 6, extending the Queens lead to 2-0.
Hruska followed at No. 5, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Virani to put the Knights within one point of clinching the match.
Akbarov clinched the victory at No. 2 with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Lofink, giving Queens a 4-0 advantage.
Senior
Caleb Brightman battled at No. 4 but fell to Albeg, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, as Hofstra earned its first point of the afternoon.
Calvo completed his 2-0 afternoon with a three-set comeback victory over Maravillas at No. 3, rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Andersson closed out the scoring at No. 1, completing a three-set comeback against Tobler with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory to cap the Knights' season-opening triumph.
