CLERMONT, FLA. – The 2025 softball season officially got going for the Queens College softball team with a Saturday doubleheader against two out-of-region foes in GMAC member Northwood University Timberwolves and NSIC member University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in THE Spring Games.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader the Knights against up Northwood, but it would be the Timberwolves who earned an 8-2 victory.
Queens concluded their Saturday against Minnesota Duluth and in a pitcher's duel, it would be a tough loss as the Knights fell to the final score of 1-0.
Game Recap vs. Northwood University
Senior third baseman
Emma Zumpol (Patchogue, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, BB) got the Knights season going with a single out to left field but the Timberwolves would leave the senior stranded as they retired the next three batters.
Sophomore utility
Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA.) would get the first start of the year and it would be a shaky start as the sophomore walked two and hit one batter to load the bases.
With no outs, Campbell would settle in as she was able to hold the Timberwolves to just one run in the bottom of the first inning.
Northwood would double their advantage in the bottom of the third using three hits to take a 2-0 lead.
Looking to respond center fielder
Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, 2B, R) opened the top of the fourth inning with a double out to left center. But as the Timberwolves got the first out, Campbell would reach first base on a fielding error, but the error would allow Baez to score as Queens cut their deficit down to one, 2-1.
Northwood would put the game by scoring six runs over the next three innings of play as Queens dropped their season opener to the final score of 8-2.
Game Recap vs. University of Minnesota Duluth
It would be a pitcher's duel in the nightcap as junior righty
Sam Voskinarian (East Northport, N.Y.) limiting the Bulldogs to four hits and one run allowed.
Throughout the first three innings of play, Voskinarian allowed just one base runner before the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning using two hits.
Queens would look to respond in the bottom of the fourth as with one out Baez
(1-3 AB) singled through the left side to get the Knights' first base runner on since the first inning of play.
Next batter sophomore shortstop
Kadie Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) would earn a walk as Queens had two runners one and just one out.
However, the Bulldogs would avoid trouble to keep their 1-0 lead intact as they got a strikeout for the second out and a caught stealing to end the inning.
Over the next three innings of play, Queens would only get one base runner on behind a single from Zumpol
(1-3 AB) but the Knights would fall in a tough 1-0 game two loss.
