FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening DII play Wednesday afternoon the Queens College men's tennis team welcomed the Greyhounds of Assumption University for non-conference play inside the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble.
It would be a hard fought doubles loss to go into singles play trailing 1-0 before the Knights used four singles matches with rookie
London Mosquera (Queens, N.Y.) at the #6 singles court clinching a 4-3 comeback victory.
The Knights improve to 3-2 on the season.
DOUBLES PLAY
Three new doubles pair made their debut against the Greyhounds with sophomore
Tim Andersson (Linkoping, Sweden) and rookie
Samuel Linck (Haarlem, Netherlands) earning a 6-4 victory at the #1 doubles court over Luigi Bassani and Herman Aguirre for an early lead.
However, the Greyhounds would tie the double play as the brotherly pair of junior
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) and debutant
Jaime Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) fell 6-4 at #2 doubles to Hugo Petersson and Jakob Bordt.
Down to the #3 doubles court between junior
Alexis Martin-Gibiard (Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France) and debutant Mosquera vs. Bernardo Balancho and Alec Pijnacker, it would be the Greyhounds that earned a 7-6
(8-6) victory as the visitors took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
SINGLES PLAY
Queens would tie the match at 1-1 as rookie
Adam Laur (Boulogne Billancourt, France) promoted to #3 singles knocked off Petersson in straight sets to the score of 6-4, 6-2.
Rookie
Pablo Serrano (Cochabamba, Bolivia) playing at #4 singles battled hard against Pijnacker but the Greyhounds would earn the victory as Serrano fell 6-3, 6-3 as the visitors reclaimed a 2-1 lead.
Queens would battle back as sophomore
Caleb Brightman (Pawling, N.Y.) playing at #5 singles knocked off Balanco in straight sets to the score of 6-2 6-2 as the Knights tied the match at 2-2.
The Knights would take a 3-2 lead as sophomore
Loup Alleno (Paris, France) promoted to #1 singles dispatched Bassani in straight sets to the score of 6-2, 6-3 as Queens now needed one more singles victory to clinch the match.
Down Linck at #2 court and Mosquera at #6 singles, Linck would fall in a tough two-set match to the score of 6-3, 7-6
(7-4) against Aguirre as the Greyhounds tied the match at 3-3.
Mosquera making his Knights debut would earn the Knights a 4-3 victory as he earned a hard-fought 7-5 first set victory over Bordt before using a 6-3 victory to complete the comeback victory for Queens.
