FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening East Coast Conference play Friday afternoon the Queens College men's tennis team welcomed the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia to town.
The Knights would clinch the doubles point winning at #1 and #2 courts before taking five of the six singles with junior
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) clinching the match at #1 court as Queens earned a 6-1 victory.
The Knights improve to 4-2 overall, and 1-0 in ECC play.
DOUBLES PLAY
The #2 doubles pair of junior
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) and sophomore
Loup Alleno (Paris, France) would give Queens an early lead as they defeated Sebastiano Palma and Elouan Queguiner to the score of 6-1.
Queens take a 1-0 lead into singles play as the #1 doubles pair of junior
Alexis Martin-Gibiard (Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France) and rookie
Adam Laur (Boulogne Billancourt, France) held off a rally from Firebirds #1 pair of Louis Mangeon and Louka Queguiner earning a 6-4 victory.
The Firebirds avoided the doubles sweep as rookie
Samuel Linck (Haarlem, Netherlands) and sophomore
David Cerne (Ljubljana, Slovenia) fell in a tough 7-5 loss to Oskar Karos and Filippo Vatteroni at #3 doubles.
SINGLES PLAY
The Knights wasted no time clinching the match winning at courts #1-#3. Sophomore
Tim Andersson (Linkoping, Sweden) would drop just one point to Queguiner at #2 court in the first set as Andresson earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory for a 2-0 lead.
Alleno put the Knights one match away from clinching the victory earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Palma at the #3 court.
Foix Sotos would clinch the match at #1 singles as he defeated Mangeon to the score of 6-1, 6-2 as Queens earned their fourth victory of the year.
Rookie
Jaime Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) made his singles debut at #6 court and would earn a hard fought 6-2, 7-6
(7-3) victory over Ghali Filali for his first singles victory of the year and the Knights fifth of the day.
Queens concluded their scoring earning their sixth victory of the year as Martin-Gibiard earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #4 singles over Elouan.
The Firebirds avoided the sweep as Laur at #5 singles fell in three sets against the experienced Karos. Karos earned the first set victory to the score of 6-4 before Laur fought back earning a 6-2 second set victory. However playing in a 10-point tiebreaker, Laur would fall 10-7 as the Firebirds earned the point but Queens would open ECC play with a 6-1 victory and their second victory of the year.
